The Endless Fascination With Human Behavior

The Path To The Future Of Understanding Us

By Dr. Cody Dakota Wooten, DFM, DHM, DAS (hc)Published 8 months ago 3 min read

Why Do We Do What We Do?

It is one of the Oldest Questions of all time that we Still Struggle to Understand.

In some ways, we have Discovered So Many Incredibly Insightful Aspects of Life.

Then in Other Ways...

We are So Clueless.

Completely.

But I Never Stop asking this Question as I Seek the Answers.

I'm currently at the Therapy Office where my Brother-in-Law receives Speech Therapy.

A Boy walked in and began to Rearrange the Cushions of the Chairs...

Dancing around the Room in a Choreography that Only He Knows.

I can See the Steps and the Pauses...

The Balance and the Precision...

It makes me Ask...

How is it that this Boy is Seeing the World?

What is Driving Him?

His Motivations, I am sure, are quite different from Yours and Mine.

I See Similar Behaviors to my Brother-in-Law as Well.

We are so quick in Today's World to Write People Off as Broken or Hopeless...

But I Wonder if that is True...

Are We All So Deeply Broken?

Or Do We Lack the Imagination and Curiosity to See Different Paths...

Different Possibilities...

To Question what We Supposedly Know...

And the Drive To Find Deeper Truths that We have been Blind to Before Now.

I Do Not Know All the Answers...

I Doubt I Ever Will Know...

But My Curiosity will Always have me Asking and Seeking New Answers.

One Thing I Do Know is that For Every Piece of Human Behavior We Understand...

There is a Significant Portion that is Completely Wrong...

And A Significantly Larger Amount that We Do Not Even Know the Beginning Of.

I have Looked Deeply Enough into Many Pieces of Scientific Research to Know this is Absolutely True.

Yet...

That Makes It All the More Exciting to Me.

If There is So Much that is Wrong with Our Understanding of Science Today...

And So Much that We Still Have to Learn...

What Possibilities Are There?

I think that We Barely have Any Comprehension of what is Truly Possible.

Even More Fascinating is that it Seems that there is a Mixture of Ways the Behavior Plays Out...

Subconscious...

Conscious...

Driven by One Brain System...

Or Another...

Things that Seem Off which are Completely Normal...

Things that Seem Normal, which are Driven by Things that are Off...

Ways We Can Act Which Seem "In Character"...

Then Other Ways Which Appear to be Completely "Out Of Character"...

We are So Predictable...

Yet Predictably Unpredictable at the Same Time...

We are Manipulated...

But Also Resilient to Manipulation.

All of these are True even though they Seem to be Impossibly Contradictory...

Opposites that Exist Cohesively...

Or more accurately, they are False Dichotomies.

There is So Much We have Yet to Understand.

So Much We Have Yet To See as Possible.

How Can We Not Be Excited about That?

But...

In Order to Accomplish this, We Will Need to Work Together.

We Will Need to Break the Silos that Exist in Research.

We Will have to Ask New Questions that Have Not Been Asked.

We Will Need to Question Our Previous Approaches and Ask, Truthfully, if We Are "Truly" Doing What is Best for Others?

Many People in Health Care Take the Hippocratic Oath...

But Rarely Ask if they are "Living" the Oath.

Just Because Something is Considered "Acceptable" Does Not Mean it is Truly in the Best Interest of those We Serve.

It is Our Duty to Serve Humanity to the Best that We are Able...

Which Means We May Need to Swallow Our Pride and Accept that There is So Much We Have Yet to Learn.

But if We Do This...

The Future has So Many Exciting Possibilities.

"Just Because Something is Considered "Acceptable" Does Not Mean it is Truly in the Best Interest of those We Serve." That is soooo true!

We must believe in service and higher purpose, even though the events and circumstances around us tell us that we live in the world captured by self-serving power-hungry narcissists. Excellent reflections, Cody.
