Part IV : Somers Historical Tidbits
Please see tip, pledge and subscribe buttons below or send tip via venmo at @Rich-Monetti Water Park In the mid 1800s, residents obviously owned horses and they even raced some of them at Nelson’s Racetrack near Woods Bridge. A day at the races wasn’t the only outlet either. The lot west of the Elephant Hotel once housed tennis courts, but leisure time aside, Somers entered the modern manufacturing age when the Empire Sewing Machine company was established in 1864. The reservoir system left the company in stitches, though. The upstream dam took away the plant’s water power, and the property was sold to Thomas Meade and Peter Muth. In turn, the duo sold the land to the St Joseph’s Normal College, and the structures were converted to classrooms and dorms. Unfortunately, New York City was still thirsty and gobbled up even more of the acreage. No longer did the college own the buildings, the college moved to Pocantico Hills, the cemetery relocated to Valhalla and the Statue of Our Lady of Lords landed at Manhattan College. Still, New York was done yet. The Amawalk Reservoir was created, which makes NYC the largest landowner in Somers. 3257 acres, the metropolis - as of 1988 - paid the majority of taxes and owned and maintained the bridges that needed to be built to accommodate the local transportation.

Nationwide Coils Moves Back into Playoff Position with 16-8 win over Level Gym
Please see tip, pledge and subscribe buttons below or send tip via venmo at @Rich-Monetti On Tuesday June 25, Nationwide Coils and Level Gym took the upper field at Reis Park and hoped to move up in the B-League standings. But the Coils were closer to the top at 3-6 and already have their eyes on the postseason. “We’re hoping to get in the playoffs and go from there,” said Manager Joe Tubiolo. So they didn’t stand still, and by game’s end, Nationwide was back in the final spot.

That doesn’t mean there weren’t any good ones. The best I can do is provide some snippets and hopefully they give a decent representation of how valuable all these teachers were to us.

Please see tip, pledge and subscribe buttons below or send tip via venmo at @Rich-Monetti Reis Park Mr. Carr I never had the pleasure of going into Mr. Carr’s inner sanctum and receive introduction to his paddle. That said, us Junior High students did all we could to not get to know Mr. Carr any better than you did. But he knew you. In transit, he’d look you in the eye, call you by name and always asked how you were doing. In other words, he gave us the respect we were due, and the sincerity had a message that was clear as day. Mr. Carr cared about every single one of us and that was really the foundation of the pulpit he sat on for the students of Somers Junior High.

A Long Unknown Backstory to My Grandparents' Nuptials
The above photo of Nonni and Nonno's wedding day was taken in Providence, Rhode Island at the Church of the Holy Ghost. Nonni and Nonno are seated with their witnesses on July 8, 1932. The bridesmaid and best man are Jenny and "Espanol," but there is a previously unknown backstory to this ceremony. But let's first explore how this New York waiter and came to meet his Providence based bride.
