Shell Lake, Wisconsin: What's in a Name?
Place names are often what we claim to be an obvious demarcation of an area. Usually descriptive toward a physical attribute, they can also tip the hat toward the unseen. Some names are honest, some are hopeful, many are ironic but those are fun too. Luck, Wisconsin, for instance or Nimrod, Minnesota, come to mind. Ware, Massachusetts (named after a fish trap- at one point was called the Manour of Peace), is a stone's throw from where I live in Belchertown, Massachusetts (named after a dude). This place used to be called Cold Springs; sounds nice, but tuns out that was just a lazification of Cowles Springs (another dude). Grasse Hill was in the running way back, I digress.

NYC: The Second-Greatest City on Earth
I haven't ever really tried travel writing before, but I was lucky enough recently to get to go on the trip of a lifetime to the USA, and even in the midst of a global pandemic, I was fascinated as a Brit out of water. I spent nearly a week in New York, before flying from New Jersey to Orlando for a few days and then on to St Petersberg, Florida, for my cousin's wedding. I'll talk about New York today, and if I/anyone else is happy with it, I'll write a sequel next week about Florida. So, in that unlikely event, stay tuned.

Dirty Sidewalks
The people here wear tired looking faces and expensive looking shoes. Coffee fuels them as they careen down the interstate and slide into boardrooms and answer phone calls. Their cheeks and breasts and foreheads and asses will remain long after the rest of them has decayed-- plastic bulbs wedged in a deteriorated skeleton as the sun swallows the earth whole. They feed their bodies plastic but never lactose. They warp their bodies into birds of paradise and then warp their cars around a downtown lamp post.

Foods I Miss While Living Abroad From A US Perspective
I read an article last week about the foods that people missed while living abroad, and later that same evening, I was out and found myself at a table with other travelers - some of them long term travelers and some just here for a couple of weeks.

6 Best Views of San Francisco
San Francisco is known for its iconic views. While many of these beautiful views are world-famous, others are local secrets. The city is 7 by 7 miles, in this compact space, there are numerous views for everyone. Most of the places I mention here are outdoors, anytime you are in San Francisco, it’s best to wear layers. Some neighborhoods are warm, but many are chilly and foggy. Anytime you are near the water especially, bring a coat, it is often very windy. There’s a reason why Fisherman’s Wharf makes a fortune selling hoodies to tourists who only packed shorts and t-shirts!

Sailing on Beautiful Lakes
An hour north of Anchorage, Alaska you can find the beautiful Lake Eklutna with over fifteen miles of shoreline. This lake is one of the clearest lakes in the US located right next to the Eklutna Glacier. This lake is a great place for salmon and trout fishing. You can enjoy picnicking by the lake and even stay overnight at a campground. If you like you can go boating on the lake and from the boathouse you can rent kayaks. If you like biking there is a trail running parallel to the lake.
