Becoming an Athlete Changed My College Experience
Picture this: I am a sophomore in college. I just spent my whole summer looking at schools to transfer to. I felt as though my school didn't allow for differing opinions. I was bored; I needed a challenge. I walk to the sports center on campus to meet up with a friend to do special education homework. When I arrive, the first thing she says to me is, "Hey Kat, do you wanna join the lacrosse team? I'm on it, it's fun, and we get to go to California for spring break!"

Horace Greeley Swim Team Is Nothing Short of a Dynasty
We take our sports seriously. The professional baseball, basketball, and football fanaticism that returns such passion from above certainly filters down in high school athletics. So it's only natural that a sport like swimming sometimes only qualifies for second class citizenry in terms of the attention it receives among the student body, in the community, and the local media. Nonetheless, with a long string of unparalleled success in Chappaqua, the Horace Greeley Swimming and Diving team prefers to defer on the so-called green card. Instead, they simply go about the business of winning.

'Sports Roundup' Covers Horace Greeley Sports Independently
For several years now, Horace Greeley High School has been putting out a school newspaper called Sports Roundup. The homespun magazine allows students to merge their passions for professional sports, its varsity teams and their writing acumen. Prior to last June, a staff of ten would collect and word process their stories before running a few hundred copies through the Xerox machine. As it turned out, advanced technology that belonged to the editor in chief's father. That procedure—even after adding the staples—just didn't sound right to Josh Rosen when he joined the publication as a freshman contributor.

Why Are You Ranking: Worst Ringless Sportsmen Listed from Ugly Golf Swing to Horrible Commentator. Top Story - July 2018.
With the roar of the crowd echoing through the air, the smell of popcorn and beer and peanuts also give the typical sports supporter a sense of witnessing the sublime. Over time, the athletes that take to the field inspire hope, hero-worship, and admiration. But after all of the lights of the ballpark or stadium have faded, all that is left is the shell of the player and if he has not achieved the ultimate goal in his field (a championship), it’s hard to take him seriously. Though such players may have racked up considerable statistics, awards, and other accolades, if they have failed to attain at least one championship during their career, the lingering question remains: how could they run a franchise or commentate on another player who has achieved a ring (or rings) as part of his efforts? As interest in sports like baseball and football dwindle and basketball seems like a predictable affair, the sportsmen who comprise this list did not skate on ice and didn’t participate in professional individual sports. Instead, their teams looked to them to get the job done and bring their respective city home a championship. Alas, all of them have fallen short of the glory of the coveted Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, the Commissioner’s Trophy, or the Vince Lombardi Trophy, respectively. Though they put in years of practice and indeed displayed incredible skill and dedication, those trophies stood just out of reach. So, get your Shut Up and Jam video games and remember to always have laces out for, “Why Are You Ranking: Worst Ringless Sportsmen Listed from Ugly Golf Swing to Horrible Commentator."

Angelique Kerber Denies Serena Williams of Making History; Wins her Third Grand Slam
After many shocks, surprises, and upsets, the final was set between Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams—the second time they would play in the Wimbledon final in three years. Williams was chasing history: to tie Margaret Court’s 24 Grand Slam title record. The American, who many call the greatest to ever play the sport, already has the record for most Grand Slam titles in the Open Era, surpassing Steffi Graf’s 22 title record at 2016 Wimbledon.

Toxic Masculinity in Sports
The sports world has always been dominated by men. As far back as the 11th century, and likely before, sports like jousting were used as tools for men to show off their strength, courage, and overall masculinity for women. This ancient idea has continued to influence the sporting world and it's getting a little old. Toxic masculinity is the adherence to traditional male gender roles, which can put men in a box, limiting the acceptance of them expressing themselves in ways that are seen as opposite to the alpha male ideal. The difference between toxic masculinity and masculinity is that with toxic masculinity, men are shamed for behaviors seen as feminine or for not meeting the masculine ideal. In a society where we are starting to call out racism and sexism on the daily, it's time to address the elephant in the locker room that is toxic masculinity.

The True Meaning Behind Playing a Sport
Have you ever given as much dedication and commitment to a sport as much as you would give towards your job or family? Most likely not. Or maybe in today’s society you put all of that commitment towards your cell phone, or any other electronic devices. The problem is that not a lot of people understand the kind of dedication and commitment it takes to be a part of a sports team whether it’s high school, travel teams, club teams, or Division I, II, or III collegiate teams. I would know, since I’ve committed almost 11 years to playing softball. It is not a very easy thing to do, but it’s definitely worth it, especially with all that money you’ve put into trying out a new sport—well let’s be honest, all that money your parents have spent just for you to kick a ball into a pop-up net or hit a ball off of a tee! Committing to a sport means so much more than just showing up to practice every other week and being at some of the games. I believe that many people don’t know what it takes to be on a sports team and how much effort and time it takes out of your everyday life just to play a sport and I am going to share my story about how much dedication I have put towards playing softball.

Why We Need to See Slamball Come Back. Top Story - June 2018.
I'm probably in the minority as someone who was an avid Slamball viewer. Most people who have heard of Slamball think of it as only basketball with a trampoline, but it's much more than that. Slamball emphasizes speed, precision, and power into one insanely entertaining 20-minute event. While the sport couldn't capitalize on its initial popularity in the early 2000s, it would thrive if it was brought back today.
