On Friday January 16, John Jay Somers Yorktown hosted Wappingers at The Dynamic Gym in Cortlandt Manor. A smaller team than in the past few years, the roster size hasn’t diminished the whole, according Kayla Cambareri. “We’re still nailing it out there,” said the John Jay senior, and the visitors could attest first hand.
John Jay Somers Yorktown took the night by a score of 174.8-166.85.
Starting on the floor, Kaitlin Gannon leveled off exceptionally with a 9.70 score. “I did my landings very well,” said the Somers senior. “I stuck them.”
An 8.45 number on the beam, she admitted her foundation wasn’t as firm. “My beam connection was a little bit wobbly,” she lamented.
The Tusker kept her head up nonetheless. “I’m getting better and putting in the hard work,” Gannon assured.
Along those lines, she isn’t measuring her goals in terms of ribbons and medals. “I’m just making sure I’m being as confident as possible, and I’m having a lot of fun, because this is my last year,” Gannon explained.
The final go around for Cambareri too, she also planted her socks on the floor. “I focused on my foot positioning,” said the John Jay Wolf.
A 9.20 resulting, a 9.15 on the vault wasn’t bad either. So she’ll obviously have her eye on the post season again. “I want to improve my new skills on the bars, the floor and get my beam more consistent,” said Cambareri.
Unfortunately, the broken toe that curtailed her post season last year can’t be forgotten. But there’s only one remedy for success. “You just have to do what you have to do,” she said confidently.
A lesson that Rita Haitoff overcame on the floor. The John Jay classmate had a stumble on the floor routine, but Gannon still had praise. “She kept going. She was strong, and that’s the definition of gymnastics,” said Gannon.
Arianna Gulli knows and was satisfied with the way she went big on the bars. “I made my full routine and completed my giant,” said the Yorktown junior.
Kicking past and swinging around the bar, she likes the progress being made this year. “I’m competing in more events and exceeding,” said the Husker.
Either way, the supportive environment is a big can’t miss. “We all get along very well, and everyone is very friendly,” said Gulli.
Still, she’s going to work harder in hopes of qualifying for the divisionals and sectionals. The same goes for Ciara Burch, and the Yorktown sophomore doesn’t complicate the regimen. “I have to be more consistent,” said the Husker.
She certainly reached the plateau on the beams with an 8.90 score. “I did well with my back over, back handspring,” said Burch.
On the floor, her 8.25 rocked to the beat of Kanye West. “All the Lights, it’s very upbeat,” she said. “There’s a lot of stuff going on.”
An energy she will need to improve on the vault. “It takes a lot of power,” she said.
So she’s going to work on her sprint to the springboard, and the rest of the team will probably do the same to continue their success.
