My Hill, My Stand.

a very clear poem.

The purpose of art is not the result.

The purpose of art is not the result.

The purpose of art is not the result.

It is, for one thing,

the making - and discovery - of something outside of oneself

and so too the making - and discovery - of something within oneself.

This is my hill, my stand.

Therefore

To type something into a bar

and get an 'article'

or a 'poem'

or a 'picture'

or a 'painting'

immediately

mysteriously

and effortlessly

is not - will never be - art.

And to call it such is an obscenity.

And to use it as such is intolerable.

It is nothing but a hazy thought

and an instantaneous shoddy result

thieved from a thousand actual creativities

and congealed into one shiny and soulless facade.

When I look at an AI-rendered image, I do not see

a piece of art beyond someone's ability, magically realized

I see only the ghost of a thing unrealized.

Yes, in it I see only a version of a person,

or an effort of theirs,

stillborn.

It is a precious idea -

never given the respect of being strived for, failed at,

and strived for again.

All of us have ideas in our heads;

Art requires - art perhaps even is -

the process of trying to make that vision available for others.

And apart from all that, we also know now

that AI is a ridiculously consumptive -

a voracious environment killer -

poisoning trees and birds and beasts and seas

as much as it kills the creative mind.

So this is my hill, my stand.

I hear protests - 'I just don't have the talent.'

'It lets me do things I wouldn't be able to otherwise.'

'I'd never have the time.'

Make time.

Try anyway.

Discover what it means

for something to be worth your failure.

Discover something inside of you

that is willing to try again.

Discover the truth that

The purpose of art is not the result.

The purpose of art is not the result.

The purpose of art is not the result.

AI is the antithesis of trying;

It is the avoidance of effort,

the dodging of process,

the killing of creativity,

and more than all that,

it is the ignorance

of the depth and necessity of time

as an ingredient

in the formation of anything worthwhile.

So get off of ChatGPT.

Get off of the AI picture generator.

I mean it.

Get off of it.

Get off of all of it.

All of it.

Pick up a pencil.

And learn what flows, buds, or burns inside of your own heart.

This is my hill, my stand.

And I know already that this battle is hopeless.

It's too convenient, too helpful, too fast, too cheap,

already to integral to too many broken systems,

making too much money, twisting hands and hearts.

So if I am alone in this,

so be it.

If the world forgets this hill, mocks this stand, hates this poem,

so be it.

So be it.

So be it.

I know already that

my rage and effort here will not be rewarded with victory,

but

The purpose of art is not the result.

The purpose of art is not the result.

The purpose of art is not the result.

Sing it, hear it, chant it, be it.

This is my hill, my stand.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

Thank you so much for reading! This piece was in no small part inspired by the following quotation, which the incredible Sir Ian McKellen reads here with such beautiful power and life. I am open to discussion about these things, and do not mean to belittle or attack anyone; I must simply be honest about the depth of my concerns about the impact of AI upon the creative world. Do know that your thoughts, stories, and hearts are all deeply appreciated by me. Cheers, all.

Love this, Gabriel. Echoes so many of my own thoughts about AI. One of my refrains is "Technology makes you lazy" - making things easier means no thought, no striving, no concentration and aren't these all things that make us human? I don't use AI but then I do feel that I am lucky enough not to need to, certainly for writing. I think it's here to stay unfortunately but perhaps it will have a novelty value only and people will be turned off to its ease. Maybe.

I’m subscribing right now, just off this poem. 1. It’s great writing. 2. I agree, I really fucking agree I’m glad you said this, and in glad you said it well. Also, I agree it’s a battle you’ll never win— for all the reasons you’ve listed and also the social element normalizing this to the point where avoiding ai art is eventually going to seem “weird” and old fashioned. But again I’m really glad you said it, and even if it’s a losing battle, you’re not alone. I’ll die on that hill with you and I know a lot of creatives feel the same, especially those who are politically charged with any anticapitalist sentiments. Many in those circles are aggressively anti ai.

Really enjoyed this. Your writing style is clear and engaging. I’m also writing on Vocal; if you ever have a moment, I’d love if you checked out my profile and followed if my work resonates. Keep it up!

  • first of all, congratulations on TS. This so well deserves this recognition. Being a writer (?) and a poet, to me failure only means to need to try harder. Your poem helped me realize that even more.

  • I thought I left a comment, guess not. Anywho back to say congrats my friend!

  • WOW! "An instantaneous shoddy result thieved from a thousand actual creativities and congealed into one shiny and soulless facade." I love your writing; this is a powerful piece that definitely resonated with me as a fellow creator.
