Giraffe, Hippo, and Happiness

When We Project: Why Solitude Isn't Always Loneliness

By Water&Well&PagePublished 2 months ago 3 min read

In the heart of the grassy plains lived Ms. Giraffe, contentedly munching on leaves high up in a tree.

Ms. Giraffe was in a joyful mood, humming a little tune between bites. She savored the blue skies, the white clouds, the gentle caress of the breeze, and the pleasant warmth of the sun dappling her skin. The air up there was wonderfully crisp and clean. She loved her elevated perch!

Down by the plains, there was a muddy watering hole. The surface of the lake shimmered under the sun. Mr. Hippo, a cute gentleman with a stocky build, was enjoying a sunbath, half-closing his eyes and lounging lazily on the water's surface.

Mr. Hippo had a good friend, Little Mosquito, who would occasionally drop by for a chat, buzzing in his ear with the latest gossip about the spiders and the lizards.

One sweltering day, Mr. Hippo was tired from playing in the mud and was resting by the lake. Even while lying still, beads of sweat were popping out on his skin. It must be because summer is approaching, he thought, it's getting hotter. He looked up at the big, red sun hanging high in the sky and confirmed his suspicion.

He then turned his attention to Ms. Giraffe, who was still eating leaves. Mr. Hippo thought, Poor Ms. Giraffe! She's so tall and beautiful, but she’s having lunch all by herself up there. Without a single friend nearby, she must be so lonely. If only he were tall enough, he would certainly go chat with her.

Ms. Giraffe, who often took solitary strolls across the plains, had actually noticed Mr. Hippo a long time ago. She observed that he spent all day alone, soaking in the water, only occasionally going out to forage, or rolling around solo in the mud. He looked so pitiful and lonely. If only she weren't so tall, she would go join him for a nice soak!

A few days later, Little Mosquito flew by again, catching Mr. Hippo up on all the latest buzz.

Mr. Hippo took the opportunity to share his concern about how lonely Ms. Giraffe seemed. Little Mosquito, who loved a good conversation and had a naturally gossipy personality, immediately flew straight to Ms. Giraffe to relay Mr. Hippo's thoughts about her solitude. Ms. Giraffe burst into laughter after hearing this, and then confessed to Little Mosquito that she thought Mr. Hippo looked lonely!

The Revelation: We Are All Living Our Own Truths

It turns out...

Ms. Giraffe and Mr. Hippo had completely misunderstood each other. They were both defining the other's situation through their own subjective lens, because ultimately, the feeling of loneliness is something only the heart knows.

Ms. Giraffe often hummed as she walked the plains, thoroughly enjoying the blue sky, the gentle breeze, and the warm sunlight. She wasn't fond of excessive socializing, and she was perfectly content with her quiet lifestyle.

And Mr. Hippo? He wasn't fussy about food; he just ate when he was hungry. His greatest pleasure was lounging lazily on the water after a meal, soaking up the sun all day, or having a playful time in the mud when the mood struck him. He was genuinely happy every single day.

They were both living happily in their own worlds. As long as they felt content inside, they were not lonely.

In the end, thanks to Little Mosquito acting as a go-between, Ms. Giraffe and Mr. Hippo finally understood what was in each other’s hearts.

We are not lonely, after all.

Ms. Giraffe and Mr. Hippo smiled at each other from a distance.

Then, Ms. Giraffe went back to her walk, and Mr. Hippo closed his eyes to enjoy his sunbath once more.

The big, red sun still hung high in the sky.

Life remained un-lonely.

Day after day.
