“And the Purge starts in… three minutes!” I click off the TV and turn to my friend Macy. “Let’s go.” She says, giving me a fanged grin. We both fling our bags over our shoulders and go to meet my boyfriend Malakai. He’s waiting for us on the street corner. The government does the Purge once a year. It’s me and Macy’s favorite bonding time. All crimes are legal for twelve hours. See, we had a problem with over population a few decades ago. The Government looked into it, and found that the number one death cause in the world was murder. So they set up the purge, and sure enough, death rates rocketed. Things started to go normal again.

Little 9-year-old Lucy Henderson laid awake in her bed for the fourth night in a row. She knew two things: She needed a better nightlight and there was a monster under her bed. Her arm clenched around her stuffed teddy bear, Charles. The tree outside clawed against the glass of her window with every gust of wind. Ghoulish faces formed from the streetlight casting shadows on her ceiling. Lucy’s eyes shut tight. Every time she did, she felt the bed stir - sure that the monster beneath it was reaching up to grab her.

The Boagie On Your Back
It all started when I lay down on the sofa. Wearing a tracksuit top, I instantly heard a snap, my bankcard in the side pocket of the jacket had cracked in two; a perfect split, horizontally down the middle. With a bit of clear sticky tape, I managed to salvage it so at least I could still make contactless payments. Later that day I went to phone the bank to issue me a new card but the battery was dead and my charger would not work. I went to log onto the internet and on the Wi-Fi log on page, there was a certificate problem, so my laptops security would not allow me access. With no phone and no way to connect my laptop, I was effectively cut off from the outside world. That was when a voice from childhood blossomed in my head. I heard my Grandma’s voice, “maybe I had a Boagie on my back”.

Madalyn had just arrived at her apartment after shopping all day for Christmas gifts for both of her and her fiancés families. As she was fumbling in her purse for her keys, she noticed a package wrapped in brown paper in front of her door. Finally, she had found her keys and she reached down and thoughtlessly scooped up the package and tucked it under her arm as she walked through the door.
