I Bought Some Time Machines From the Thrift Store
What if I told you I buy time machines from the local thrift stores now and then? Each one takes me to an entirely unimaginable place and time, and it works like a charm every single time. One moment, I’m sitting at my desk sipping coffee on a warm Saturday afternoon, then the next moment, I’m in old London or Paris in the 1920s or with the Mughals in India. I can choose how long I stay in that period, live, breathe and eat the food of the locals, wear the local attire, and come back once I have experienced it all. If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m talking about books. Old and dusty, having passed many hands, books are my favorite time traveler guides to buy from the local thrift stores. Sure, I love the smell of new books whenever I enter the bookstores or receive my orders on Amazon, but there is something evocative about the old books you find in the thrift shops. Well, here are some of the treasures I bought for less than $5 each in various shops.

On the other hand, there are also some villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who have completely changed the thoughts of the audience by their desire to make a difference. However, the Survival Film genre does pull another crowd, who shout “could have” or “should have” remarks from a sofa, with a bucket of popcorn on their lap. Who would have thought that the 2020 Covid-19 survival strategy would in fact involve a sofa, bucket of popcorn, and films? Whichever camp you're in doesn’t matter, all are welcome. The thrill of the Survival Film Genre is being able to mentally strategize quicker than the protagonist on screen, thus making one’s self feel confident to win the title: Survival of the Fittest.

When Makoto Shinkai’s Kimi no Nawa(Your Name) hit theaters in 2016, the film instantly achieved the second-largest gross for a domestic film in Japan and the fourth-largest ever. It topped the box office for a record-breaking 12 weekends and became the highest-grossing animated film in China. For once, the critics and fans were in agreement; the movie was good. So when the US release finally began its run in late April of 2017, I knew I had to go see it, and it didn’t disappoint. Everything from the animation, to the soundtrack, even the opening grabbed hold of me and refused to let go.
