Author's Note: Everything in this article is my point of view as a core developer in a startup. I generalized it as much as I can, but not everyone's experiences are the same.

What is Happening to Theaters and Cinema?
As I was looking into any past articles that are on the same topic, I saw an article asking if movie theaters were dying. I looked at the date it was published and it was published in november 2019. I chuckled a little to myself. The author at the time it was published had no clue what was about to happen and how absolutely bad the cinema world was about to get. Before the pandemic what caused people to worry about movie theaters was streaming exclusive movies. Netflix and Amazon are the main two streaming services with a large catalog of exclusive movies. At the time it seemed like within maybe a decade theaters would become less commonplace and streaming would become the dominant movie platform. Within a few months theaters closed and every single movie released was on streaming. One of the major streaming only movies before the pandemic ‘The Irishman’ still needed to have a short limited release in theaters to qualify for the academy awards, given that the movie was marketed as a Netflix exclusive. Only being able to see a movie for three weeks in theaters, with some states only having one or two theaters that are running it is a concept that is brand new and would never have been conceivable a few years ago. Then clearly, the pandemic hit, theaters closed and everything changed. The Oscars are now recognizing straight to streaming movies with no theater release. This last year has seen a lot of changes, and for better or for worse, the world of cinema is going to be changed forever.

My Passion
I remember sitting in school and listening to the teacher talk on and on. Loading us up on facts. I would mindlessly take dictation, do0dle in my notebook, or contemplate my own interpretation of a fact. I have never been too interested in facts. I always enjoyed using facts or objects to create an idea, story, or design.

Cinema Paradiso
Cinemas are open again, and the early signs are promising. One of the biggest theater chains, Cineworld, has reported the best box office takings since theaters were forced to close some 15 months ago. Results from the first weekend audiences were allowed back were “beyond expectations,” according to Cineworld, thanks to movies like Godzilla v. Kong and the Peter Rabbit sequel, with Cruella and a Quiet Place follow-up just round the corner.

Movie Genres We May Never See Again
Movies evolve and change with their audiences. So, it’s no surprise that some genres are dying out if they haven’t already. There are many reasons why a genre might not stay in the light, whether it be that people don’t care anymore or simply that everything has been done and nothing new can be done or said. While it doesn’t mean we didn’t have great movies to enjoy in each of these genres, we just may not get another movie like these in the near (or possibly different) future.

CGI and Its Use in Cinema
It seems today that many people feel the addition of computer-generated imagery, or CGI, to films is going to completely ruin the age-old tradition of filmmaking by replacing actors with computer-generated models, creating a less authentic world, and simply making it easier to make a film. However, it is incredibly important to take into consideration just how much work goes into a CGI film or even just one scene that utilizes CGI. It’s important to realize that CGI can enhance a film’s storytelling and that not everyone uses it in order to make a great film. If used properly, CGI can be a fantastic tool to enhance the storytelling of a film.
