10 Things You Didn't Know About Stan Lee
Unless you've been living under a rock for more than half a century, you know that Stan Lee is one of the most important and influential figures in the world of comic books. Lee's name is forever tied to Marvel Comics and the many characters that he created and worked on there. In fact, there is probably no better known name so closely associated with comic books. The titles associated with Lee are endless: The Incredible Hulk, The Amazing Spider-Man, Iron Man, and many more. If you know nothing about comic books or the pioneers who created them, you probably still know his name and the reason why he is famous. Without Lee, we would have been deprived, not only of his comics, but of the many Marvel Comic films of the 21st Century. Lee's creative vision has come to largely shape the idea and mystique of super heroes as a pop culture phenomenon. While these facts are largely and widely known, there are, perhaps, some things you didn't know about Stan Lee, comic book pioneer.

Why Jamie Lee Curtis' Appeal Endures
I became a fan of Jamie Lee Curtis a bit later in the game than some of my peers. As a teen, I knew her as a horror and suspense actor, thanks to movies like Blue Steel and, of course, Halloween, and neither genre appealed much to me. As schlocky as it sounds, I did not need to fuel my already-active imagination with dreams of a goalie mask-wearing bad guy carrying a bloody knife, among other things.

Not With the Times, or Ever Being Worth Our Time
I really didn’t know much about Roseanne, either with the original show or the recent revival from this past year. I mean, I was curious. I had seen some episodes when I was younger, but was too confused to make much sense of it or how much time had lapsed. Nowadays, though, my eyes and ears are still wide open along with many others to everything relating to the show, what with the controversy from this past summer surrounding the titular star and co-creator’s racist tweet and the official cancellation of the revived show on ABC that the corporation made as a response.

The Very Talented Omar Sharif
It was with sadness that I read of the passing of Omar Sharif on July 10, 2015 in Cairo, Egypt. The actor came into this world as Michel Demitri Chalhoub. He first came to my attention in the movie Dr. Zhivago with his dark good looks and smoldering eyes. Even though the movie was rather heavy with scenes from the Russian Revolution it had that special kind of romance that turned male stars into symbols of romance for women everywhere. I believe this movie did what Gone With the Wind had done so many years earlier for Clark Gable who played Rhett Butler. Suddenly women all over the world were looking for their own Rhett Butler or Yuri Zhivago and would sigh over these two actors. It is ironic to think that the actor died of a heart attack just as in his role of Yuri Zhivago, we see Zhivago clutch at his heart and collapse on the street toward the end of the movie.

Morality and Apology in the Public Eye
Following Robin William’s suicide in 2014, there was an outpouring of celebrity apologies due to their less than polite reactions and/or previous statements on depression and suicide (Norton). For example, Shepard Smith “apologized for having the nerve to question whether it made Williams a coward” (Norton). Yet, every day these less than profound apologies are released by celebrities at the demand of the public. Anything from licking a donut in a bakery to racial slurs are treated in the same way: a public apology is demanded. Therefore, I suggest that the issuance of public apologies by celebrities in the public eye, regarding a large range of offenses, is not morally praiseworthy. This claim is primarily supported through Derrida’s understanding of forgiveness and its possibilities. Furthermore, I suggest a placeholder for the “I’m sorry—“it’s okay,” format of communication we understand today in regard to accidents or minor offenses.

Jason Momoa, We Love You!
I was first introduced to Jason Momoa through my husband. Maybe that's not an entirely accurate statement, but hear me out. My husband used to watch Stargate: Atlantis regularly. As a result, I ended up at the very least being in the room when the show was on. I'd never really watched the TV series Stargate; I really wasn't a big fan of the original movie starring James Spader and Kurt Russell, so the thought of slogging through a series based off of the film was not one I entertained. However, my husband loves science fiction series, and so, I ultimately absorbed bits and pieces of Stargate: Atlantis through a form of osmosis.
