At The Edge

Sometimes the first step is the hardest, because that is a step that you have never taken before. You know that if you do not take that step, then this new endeavour cannot begin.

Here you are standing on the edge of a future that will not happen if you do not put one foot in front of the other. The easiest option is to just do what you have always done, to fall in with the herd and make sure you conform and don't offend anybody, but you know that is not what you want to do. You are more, much more, than that.

The problem with the future is that you do not know what is going to happen. There are no guarantees, nothing is definite, but if you don't take that first step, then you will never find out what could happen for you.

You take that first step, and a second step, and walk over the edge into your unknown future, which will be formed and moulded by your own mind and hands.

When the third step is taken, you know there can be many more, and they could take you further than you have ever dreamed. At times, there may be uncertainty, and you may need help and guidance, but this journey will always be your own.

You will discover new paths, some may be right, some may be wrong, and every fork in the road will give you a choice, and if you are lucky, there may be a signpost telling you the best place to go.

Once you step over the edge, you can start to build your future. It may be a story like this, a wall or a house, a piece of music, whether you think you are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or John Cage, or a work of art to compare with Leonardo Da Vinci or Jackson Pollock.

The future is there to be created and discovered.

When you are standing at the edge, unsure whether to take that first step, you are plagued by the desire to have everything you want immediately, but you know you have to put in the effort to achieve results. You have to wind a clock and set the alarm to get the desired result from your timepiece. So the steps have to be taken.

Once you are on your way, you can look back and take pride in your actions because you know you are building your future.

We all do it in one way or another. The fact that you are reading these words means that I have stepped over the edge and started building a story using nothing but words to bring you along here.

Sometimes our journey is solitary, through a gentle glade, along a river, and you are the only one experiencing it, and you know that if you had not taken that first step, you would never have experienced these beautiful sights and feelings, so that step over the edge was the right thing to do, and you know it.

Eventually, you will return to the start, to the edge, having completed this small piece of your future that has now become part of your past, recorded in your memories. You feel happiness and satisfaction that you built this experience, and no one else could have done it.

Once again, you are standing on the edge, wondering whether to take that initial step. You know that you can, and you know that you can succeed in building something new and worthwhile, that will add to your future and happiness.
