The Unknowing Night Owl
He was running. God, he was running so fast. “Have I always ran this fast?” It’s been 2 years and 11 months since Marcus had seen anything else outside his two man cell and the occasional time spent outside in the yard. Serving a ten year sentence for manslaughter, Marcus, or “Night Owl” as his cellie liked to call him due to the fact that he was up late every late, had been devising up a plan to break out of prison and head south. Just south. No actual plan beyond escaping, and getting as far away as his feet would take him. Maybe he’ll change his identity and get a job as a cook in a night club somewhere in Tampa. Maybe he’ll run into someone at said night club and score a good paying job as a roofer or something. He was good with his hands, and aside from being a fantastic cook, he was also a skilled craftsman. He wasn’t worried about the struggle of what came next. Just getting the hell away from Powhatan Correctional Center.

The Escape
I looked out the window as we were driving past tree after tree going up the windy path. The ascent was steep. As the car climbed the mountain road, I felt my ears begin to clog; I placed yet another piece of gum in my mouth to chew. This was all new to me. I lived my entire life in the city. I already missed it. It was nice knowing that I could rely on cell service for GPS. Or even a taxi. I was told the nearest bus station was about a mile and a half away. Out here, it was just more dirt and trees. I once took an English class where people spent their time writing about how beautiful nature is. They called it romance. I don’t see what is so romantic about getting bit by mosquitos. When we passed by yet another owl, I was reminded how little I knew about animals. All I was used to were the city rats that skirmished throughout the tunnels of the underground city. We took another bend in the road.

Initiation
Tom diverged from his usual path home from work. Normally, he would exit the glass doors, making sure to hold it open for any cute coworkers leaving at the same time. He worked at the publishing house for seven years now, working his way up to an Editor-in-Chief position, of which there were only four. He had several employees working under him, but of course, there were still more above. Regardless, he had advanced along his career path, always coming home with the intentions of working on his own novel. But, after feeding his nine year old cat, Greg, walking on the treadmill for thirty minutes, and preparing supper, he was in no mood to continue the story of Hernando’s rebels in the Spanish plains. He had good intentions.

The Trouble With Bernie
The Trouble with Bernie Dearest Marksmen of Historical Accuracy, Campbell River, it must be noted, is almost as far away from anything as a person can get in North America. It's not as far away as say, Horsefly, or Castlegar, or Duncan, and not nearly as far away as Fair Harbour; yet if we are being honest, which in all honesty we hope very much to be accepted as such, Campbell River is not as close to anything as Vancouver is, certainly light years away from Kelowna's proximity to any and all action, to say nothing of Kamloops and Prince George.
