Virtual Kindergarten
When I started in education thirty years ago, computers were only found in the office of the administrators and secretaries. Attendance was taken on an attendance sheet and a responsible student would run it to the office. Now, fastforwarding to 2022 and the COVID-19 pandemic is still reeling it's ugly head. It has affected more than just inconvenience of favorite restaurants closing early, or the favorite items you run to the store to grab are out of stock most of the time. In many states in the U.S., online learning is still in play, or at least a opportune alternative.

My First (But not my last) Encounter with a Bully
It’s not like this is a memory you want to reminisce about for the rest of your life. So when I decided to write about this topic, it caused me to sit here for quite a bit and try to reminisce through all the times I had been bullied in my life. Let’s just say there are more times than I’d like to admit. But I guess the earliest memory I have of being bullied would be in 4th grade. And I can honestly say my first bully is the probably worst type of bully there is…the bully that pretends to be your friend.

I Am Not Wrong
So, I’m wrong for not wanting to drop my kids off with strangers but your correct because you drop your kids off with strangers hmmm. No, were just two different people with different looks on life. Yes, I am a teacher, or in college to be now and I was teaching but yeah covid. Parents can trust me with there children I know I am a good person but if they don’t trust me defiantly would understand I would not be offended. The parents that do trust the teachers I understand that, build a relationship. Its not about just trust for me, I could trust the whole staff all I want but that doesn’t change reality for me.

My Silent Twisted Friend
We were in our street clothes – a half-dozen gangly, bulging masterpieces of grade-school physical education. It was our “free intro lesson” at the local branch, tucked away next to Duck Chang’s Restaurant and one of those ‘dollar’ stores. The instructor herded us into the storefront space to the side, just off the main room where regular classes were always in session.

Letters Never Sent - Vol 8
June 1999 Dear Lisa, I’m not sure if you remember me. We went to Drama Camp together the summer between 9th & 10th grade. After camp we wrote for a little while, but then I guess its been almost 10 years since I heard from you now. I thought about it for a while back then, like I thought I had done something to offend you, but aside from asking for a picture of your boobs when I was a horny 15 year old, I couldn’t think of anything that offensive. I gotta tell you, it took me all year to get over you. I mean sophomore year, I should have been loving life, but there I was reading Billy Shakespeare in the library, pining away for summer love. Looking back it seems lame, but at the time, I was so smitten, I didn’t even care that the other kids called me Shakes the Clown or Drama Queen. I just thought that if i learned all those fancy lines, I could come up with something smart to say, but all i got was an eye infection from the dust in the library.

Its a real book, honest
I come from a time when schools focussed on the basics of maths and English. Focussing on writing and calculating before getting to much else. It makes sense, of course, because that is the start you need for all the other subjects that school try and fill you up with.

That Final Time at Band Camp
Staring at the glowing warmth of the bonfire, I was thinking about what I could possibly talk about. “Remember guys, let’s try to keep it a nice five to ten. There’s a lot of seniors and we don’t want to spend all night in the cold.”

Why can't it be both?
"Teachers are in it for the outcome, not the income," someone in the club remarked. My education honor society in college, Kappa Delta Pi, was trying to develop a shirt design. This seemed to be the winner. It was a quote loved by the group of soon-to-be-educators. The goal was to raise money for school supplies to donate to a local classroom.

"You wouldn't understand..."
“You wouldn’t understand,” The parent of one of my students tells me over the phone. I called her to let her know that her son was currently failing my class as he has not turned in an assignment all quarter and was absent more times than present.
