Rising Above the Stones They Throw
How I Turn Criticism, Rejection, and Negativity Into My Strength

Life has a way of testing us.
Sometimes it does so quietly, with small frustrations or subtle slights. Other times, it throws obstacles so sharp and sudden that you wonder if you can survive the impact.
And then there are the stones — the ones people throw at you.
I’m not talking about literal rocks. I’m talking about words, actions, judgments, and opinions meant to wound. A sneer in passing. A harsh criticism. A friend who betrays trust. A colleague who underestimates your worth. Even strangers with careless remarks can hurl stones at your spirit.
For years, I thought I had two options: dodge the stones or let them crush me. But life doesn’t work that way. Stones will keep coming. You cannot outrun them, and you cannot live perfectly shielded. The only choice that truly matters is how you respond.
⸻
I Catch the Stones
At first, it hurts. It always hurts.
I feel the sting of each thrown word, each subtle attack. My heart tightens. My mind races. I replay the scene in my head, imagining what I should have said, what I could have done differently.
Then I started doing something different: I catch them.
I stop trying to ignore them or pretend they don’t exist. I acknowledge their weight. I examine them. Where do they come from? Fear? Insecurity? Jealousy? Ignorance? Most stones are not truly about me — they are about the person throwing them.
Some stones are small. Almost laughable. But others are jagged, sharp, designed to leave marks. And yet, even the sharpest stones carry lessons if you are willing to look for them.
⸻
I Sort Through Them
Not all stones are equal. Some are heavy, meant to hurt, while others are light, almost unnoticed.
I started sorting them. Some are constructive, revealing something I can improve about myself. Others are destructive, meant to diminish me, but even they have a purpose — they teach me resilience.
Sorting the stones helps me see which I can learn from and which I can simply set aside. I do not need to internalize every word. I do not need to let every attack define me.
⸻
I Build With Them
Here’s the turning point: I began stacking the stones.
Each negative comment, each failure someone pointed out, each dismissal I endured became a brick. Layer by layer, I built a platform under my feet.
Suddenly, the things meant to crush me became the things that elevated me. Stones I once feared now lift me higher than before. The insults that tried to bury me are now my foundation. Every criticism has contributed to the person I am becoming — stronger, wiser, and more deliberate.
⸻
I Step On Them
Once the pile of stones is high enough, I climb.
I step on them one by one, not as an act of revenge, but as a conscious choice to rise above. Each step is a decision: I will not be defined by others’ attempts to tear me down. Each stone supports me as I move forward.
This is when the magic happens. I see the world from a higher perspective. I can look back at those who tried to hurt me and realize they are still below, anchored by their own limitations, while I am climbing.
⸻
I Transform Pain Into Power
The stones don’t just elevate me physically; they transform me internally.
Where I once felt anger, I now feel clarity. Where I once felt bitterness, I now feel focus. Where I once doubted myself, I now recognize my resilience.
The stones become tools rather than weapons. They shape my character instead of damaging it. Each painful experience becomes a lesson in strategy, patience, and perseverance.
⸻
I Let Go of the Weight
After a while, I stop carrying the stones in my hands.
I have learned what I need from them. The anger, resentment, and frustration are no longer useful. I release them, letting them lie where they landed.
Freedom comes when I no longer need to hold the stones, yet the platform remains. I can still rise above, still see clearly, still move forward with intention. I carry the lessons, not the bitterness.
⸻
Every Stone Has Value
It’s important to understand this: no stone is wasted.
Even the ones that seemed unfair, the ones that cut the deepest, the ones that arrived at the worst possible moment — all of them contribute to growth. They test your patience, sharpen your perspective, and strengthen your resolve.
The stones I’ve collected are proof of survival. Proof of learning. Proof that I am capable of rising, again and again, no matter how many are thrown my way.
⸻
A Message for Anyone Reading This
If someone is throwing stones at you today, remember this:
• You can let them hurt you.
• You can let them weigh you down.
• Or you can catch them, examine them, and turn them into something that lifts you.
This is not magic. It’s a choice. Every day, every challenge, every attack gives you an opportunity to rise. And when you decide to step on the stones instead of letting them crush you, you discover something remarkable: you are stronger than the world thought you were.
⸻
Life will keep throwing stones. People will continue to try to bring you down. But you are not powerless. You are not weak.
Stand tall. Catch the stones. Learn from them. Build your platform. Step higher than you ever imagined. And when you do, look down at the people who tried to stop you and smile — because you are no longer on the ground.
You are rising above.
