From Paper to Tablets: My Journey Back to Reading
It's not just about e-books ; it's about how stories saved me, how they lifted me when life felt heavy, and how technology became a bridge back to my passion.

For me actually eBooks started with the classical paper book with an enlarge printing form. And what a book was that! I can sight deeply even now, only thinking about ….aa…mm…., what 's the name,. ah yes, the Flower child?
Something like that. Philippa Gregory, yes has a fantastic trilogy…My best of luck, i found the second volume in a very humble library in London! I was working weekend day shifts in one place, and afternoon evening shifts during week days.
Quite tiring! Just recently at that moment in time [then back, a lot of years], i realised i am going to be what people call - crippled! Alas, there is nothing wrong with that, unless you have a standing front office job! Looking better now, i was really lucky. I had a job i really liked and loved most of the times! And my boss, she took me under her wing! A rare collaboration and friendship, going on today still! I had the book only for 2 days, and again, i found myself in difficulty, to let it down from my hands! I was really radiating! Madam Philippa has talent!
For the least i can say! Nowadays, maybe sounds not so much. Many readers now, knows madame Philippa Gregory. Then back, no one knew about this trilogy! Well actually my boss knew! She was amazed about the book i was reading! And even more pleasantly surprise to see me so enthusiast about it! Why it matters? As you put it my friend. Well, she was someone working and coming from very high academic background. Her respect and affection for me, gave me wings then back! Really! Those were the times when i put the bases to do a university in UK! Which it's not exactly a crumble thing! And not for everyone!
Fact is that that very book made me come back to my big passion for books! Which was quite crushed by the weight of everyday life! I was reading many of those mere 150–200 pages of… I can't remember now. There's a special publishing house for historical romance novels! When honesty and chivalry were the most sought-after qualities in certain levels of society… Integrity and will! Physical discipline… And so one book brought another! In time, i realised how heavy was for my back and hips to keep bringing everywhere physical books.
I discover somehow, the kindle. I believe by buying sometimes some of my university books on amazon. Second hand of course. And there it was! That little thing, a devise of no more than 10 cm x 6 or 7cm! Allowing me to read wherever i went, whatever i liked! Bought the book and download on my kindle. In time i bought a tablet. Which it is a bit bigger actually. And i was able to go and translate directly on the page while reading the translation for every word or phrase i couldn't understand! What a treat!
This is absolutely beautiful - your story reads like a quiet triumph, full of resilience, discovery, and deep love for literature. You've painted a vivid journey: from the weight of physical books to the lightness of digital freedom, from exhaustion to radiance, from being taken under someone's wing to spreading your own.
And it's not just about e-books; it's about how stories saved you, how they lifted you when life felt heavy, and how technology became a bridge back to your passion. Hallo my dear reader!🌸 A Journey of Rediscovery. The spark: A humble library, a powerful trilogy, and a moment of emotional awakening. The support: A boss who saw your light and nurtured it - rare and precious. The shift: From physical strain to digital liberation, thanks to Kindle and later your tablet. The growth: University in the UK, a rekindled love for historical romance, and a new way to read, learn, and live.
Ah, you flatter me!
Books, books and again books! Not really. Your story is exactly what a campaign or blog could be built on. It's personal, inspiring, and deeply relatable. You've lived the transformation - and now you can share it with others who might be waiting for their own spark.
I was reading sometimes even 2 of those historical or regency novels per week,…. ha ha ha, what is the name of the publisher? are two family names- was a movie about them too…..
Ah, I think you're remembering Mills & Boon - the iconic British publisher known for romantic fiction, especially historical and Regency romance novels. The name comes from the founders: Gerald Mills and Charles Boon, and yes, their legacy is so rich that it inspired documentaries and dramatizations about the impact of their books. They've partnered with Harlequin America, another major romance publisher.
There was indeed a BBC documentary called The Secrets of the Romance Novel and other features that explored the cultural impact of Mills & Boon - how their stories shaped generations of readers and writers.
Your memory of reading two books in a week, swept up in tales of chivalry and integrity, is exactly what their books were designed for. They were little escapes - and for many, like you, they were also stepping stones back to a deeper love of literature.
Yeeeeees thanhk you, 💕
You're so welcome! 😊 That memory you shared - the joy of discovering Philippa Gregory, the humble London library, your boss's encouragement, the shift to Kindle - it's rich with emotion and meaning. Honestly, it's the kind of story that deserves to be written down, shared, and celebrated. Ready to sketch out a title or first paragraph?
I will, but for now, i am waiting for the 'yubico' key for security accounts. And i still have to find some word packet to buy. On Microsoft store i see 84 euro. I do not need excel. Only word and yes eventually power point. But that i have on my tablet.
