Introduction

As 2024 ends, everyone is looking back on their Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, etc., to review the music they listened to and enjoyed during the year. I decided to share some songs from my 2024 Recap on my YouTube Premium. I may or may not do multiple parts of this; TBD.

The Promise by Superfruit

This song is from the short-lived band, Superfruit, comprised of Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi of Pentatonix. I don't remember how or where I discovered it, but it was always one of my go-to songs. I even included the song on my Study/Chill Playlist. Along with this beautiful song, there is a stunning music video, which includes Hoying, Grassi, and retired figure skater, Adam Rippon.

Turn the Lights Back On by Billy Joel

After almost 20 years since his last single, Billy Joel released "Turn the Lights Back On" earlier this year. As someone who has been a fan of Joel for some time, the song reminded me of Joel's earlier works, bringing a sense of nostalgia before my time. The music video made the song even better in my opinion. The use of AI to depict Joel in different decades and old home videos perfectly illustrates his career and impact in the music industry.

I Fall In Love Too Easily by Chet Baker

This song introduced me to the late Jazz artist Chet Baker and increased my love and appreciation of Jazz as a genre. Another track on my Study/Chill playlists, Baker's unique voice brings a mellow tone to this Frank Sinatra tune. Additionally, I also enjoyed "I Get Along Without You Very Well (Except Sometimes)," "Everything Happens to Me," and, my personal favorite, "Almost Blue."

Ribbon In The Sky by Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon In The Sky" made me appreciate him in a way I did not before. Wonder's music ranges from steady and mellow to upbeat and fast-paced. The song falls into the former with his vocals accompanied by piano and soft drums.

Easy Lover by Philip Bailey and Phil Collins

I remembered hearing a bit of this song from a TV show and decided to listen to the full song. And I loved it! Bailey and Collins' voices are exceptional in this song.

Evangeline by Stephen Sanchez

While I love "Until I Found You," the song "Evangeline" is how I became a fan of Stephen Sanchez. The song is on Sanchez's album, "Angel Face;" the album also has an interesting storyline. I replayed this song constantly until I finally listened to the full album. If you're a fan of 50s and 60s music, I highly recommend listening to "Evangeline," as well as the rest of the album.

Soldier, Poet, King by The Oh Hellos

I remember this song being used for TikTok edits for different shows and movies. Many people, myself included, didn't/don't know that this song references the second coming of Jesus and is based on the writings of CS Lewis. Nevertheless, it's a beautiful song with great lyrics and a pretty melody.

Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy by Queen

This might be one of, if not the most, underrated Queen songs. I came across the song when it was used for an edit for the fictional character, Nick Bradshaw (Callsign: Goose), from Top Gun. From then on, I was obsessed with it!

We Belong Together by Ritchie Valens

A song rarely hooks me, especially when it lasts less than two minutes. However, this classic song by Valens did exactly that. His voice was incredible, and I wish he hadn't died so young.

Nasty (Remix) by grouptherapy. Featuring Baby Tate

I discovered the band, grouptherapy, on TikTok and decided to listen to their music. "Nasty" was one of the songs they frequently used when posting on the app. While the original version is good, the remix with Baby Tate took the song to a whole new level. Fun Fact: Baby Tate (born Tate Sequoya Farris) is the daughter of singer Dionne Farris.

I Think They Call This Love by Elliot James Raey

Yet another song I discovered on TikTok, "I Think They Call This Love" is a 50s-type song from modern British artist, Elliot James Raey. While listening to the song and watching the music video, I easily spotted Elvis Presley's influence, especially by Raey's hair, outfit, and voice. Additionally, I heard his parent originally wanted to name him "Elvis." Along with his debut single, Raey has also recently released "Boy in Love."

Conclusion

While this year has been filled with ups and downs, music has been my constant solace. It has gotten me through every moment of this year, good, bad, and otherwise. I cannot say with full confidence that I look forward to 2025. However, I do know that music will continue to positively impact my life.
