Somers Goes Around the Bend at Bowdoin

At Bowdoin Park, Julia Duzynski did a pretty good job summing up some of the difficulties. “It’s running on rocks the entire time and my shoes kept slipping,” said the junior. But Duzynski remained in stride and will continue to do so even further north.

A pretty straight forward assumption, the bracket positions didn’t lie, but the three set sweep still produced some drama.

John Jay Moves onto Semifinals with Win Over Tappan Zee
Please see tip, subscribe and pledge buttons Click for all fall slideshows On Monday November 4, John Jay hosted Tappan Zee in the quarterfinal round, and the goal of winning sectionals has some added juice this year. “We really want to win it for him and go all the way,” said Jaime Bartley-Cohen of Coach Rizzotti, who is retiring after the season. So a split after two games possibly signaled an unwanted early retirement but not for long.

Somers Falls 4-2 in Section Finals

But the Garnets weren’t counting, and it didn’t take long to set a tone that carried through to the end.

John Jay Closes the Book on another Successful Season

But a 2-0 loss spoiled the chance, and while another chapter won’t be written, Coach Debbi Walsh closed the book on this season with pride.

Somers Heads to Section Finals with 2-1 Victory Over Pleasantville

The girls took a 2-0 first half lead and the margin held for 30 more minutes. Still, a Pleasantville goal at 9:01 did sew some doubt but not on the field, according to Julia Arbelaez.

Somers Stays Undefeated with 38-7 Victory Over Brewster

Click For All Fall Slideshows On October 18, Somers stayed home on Friday night, and Logan Ruby helped his teammates quickly put their feet up on a play the defense was practicing all week. “Right before, I called it out, because I knew exactly what they were going to do,” said the corner back,” and the forewarning set the table for the rest of the game.

John Jay Storms Back for Five Set Victory over Lakeland

At the outset, though, the express was definitely not running. “It’s so easy to get down in a position like that, and say, I guess we don’t have it tonight,” said Coach Tom Rizzotti of the 2-0 game deficit. But this team’s real itinerary is nonstop, and their true form eventually took hold.

Three versus six, the Wolves bust out with a first half goal and had visions of the semis. But the second half had the home team forcing a tie, so overtime would raise the roof for one team and crush the other in despair.

Somers Loses Heartbreaking Back and Forth to Panas

Molly Gallagher Wall isn’t Enough to Beat Lakeland Again
Please see tip, pleedge and subscribe buttons Two weeks ago, John Jay traveled to Lakeland to possibly face another loss against the 15 time defending Section One Champs. Instead, Molly Gallagher put up 19 saves, and the Wolves earned their first ever victory versus the Hornets. So with the rematch on Saturday October 5, Gallagher gave Lakeland fits again. But this time there was a blemish, and one was all it took.
