Little Girls Growing Up Too Fast
We were among the lucky children growing up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York. Having New York City for a hometown could be very daunting it was not just your typical hometown with a simple Main Street. Children who grew up in small towns, in my eyes, were the lucky ones where everyone knew each other, and you could have a real sense of belonging.

World of the Eastern Whip-poor-will
This bird has been made famous in poems, folk songs and literature due to its endless chanting talents on summer nights. It’s sort of like providing a romantic interlude. The Eastern Whip-poor-wills are real easy to hear but are difficult to see. They have a brindled plumage that blends in well with gray-brown leaf litter in the open forests where they make their home and breed and roost. The come out from perches at dawn and dusk and on moonlit nights to gather up insects in their cavernous mouths. Unfortunately, these once-common birds are on the decline in parts of their range due to the fact that open forests are being converted into suburbs or agriculture.

Walk Among the Dead
These are the places where tourists usually don’t roam. They don’t realize that among the quiet and the gravestones there are a lot of interesting monuments and even architecture to see. Cemeteries are most likely not on anyone’s list when they travel abroad unless they have a few ancestors they want to visit. However, cemeteries hide the secrets of the past and even though you may think that there are shadows following you everywhere I don’t think it’s a bad idea to take a tour through a cemetery.

After my dad died when I was ten in 1967, and the strikes came on in 1968, my mom was worried about my schooling. She knew it would not be easy for her to put me into a private school, but because it was uncertain how long school would be closed, she looked into it. Mom found a religious private school Lutheran Elementary School two blocks from where we lived.
