I live with Lyme disease and founded the North Texas Lyme Support Group in the Dallas Fort-Worth Area in 2010. I write about invisible chronic illness related to Lyme disease for educational purposes.

Does Your Place of Worship Know How to Minister to Those with Chronic Illness?
I have been attending a place of worship since I was in seven years old when my father gained custody of me and my sister. Physically, I was a healthy child. I remember sitting in pews seeing people with boils and crutches, and others who were dealing with illness. I have always been observant to those around me, a "people watcher." As I look back, to evaluate if I have ever been in a place of worship that loved on hurting people who were/are chronically ill, I really can't say that beyond a rare one-a-year healing prayer service or prayer list that I observed much emphasis on supporting those who were dealing with any type of chronic illness, whether visible or invisible.

Living With Chronic Illness Is a Full-Time Job
Managing chronic illness is a full-time job. For those of you who deal with it on a daily basis, you understand. For those that don't, you would never imagine how much time, effort, and strength it takes out of every single day. On top of working a full-time job, managing my health condition leads me into amazement of how well I keep it together during the eight hour days. It's when I get home when I fall apart from exhaustion.

If My Body Came With A Zipper
There are days I wish my body was designed with a zipper. I often tell my husband, "I wish I had a zipper and could climb out this body, if only for a moment." That zipper would be my way to freedom, a way to escape this pain-riddled body. I hurt constantly—at least during the hours I am awake. Sleep is an escape for me, but who wants to sleep all the time? Not me. Not anyone.

My Better Day Is Someone Else's Bad Day
I have to admit, as someone with an invisible chronic illness, I have a hard time imagining what others who live with an invisible chronic illness go through each day. I have a co-worker that has severe back pain from a car accident; a friend who has digestive issues and chronic pain in her hands, shoulders, and neck; another friend who has severe anxiety and depression; and a sister who is homebound due to fibromyalgia. Yet, I don't know what they truly experience each and every day. Every now and again, I think I might get a glimpse through my own suffering from Lyme disease and visceral hyperalgesia.
