The Rookie. Content Warning.
The lonesome wail of a distant siren cut through the cold night air, adding to the city's dismal atmosphere. Det. Marchetti blew the steam off his coffee with a sigh, taking a slurp before ducking under the plastic yellow tape stretched across the alley. It was thicker than mud and only half as tasty, but it was the best cup the 42nd precinct could brew. Besides, he wasn't in a position to complain. There were worse things in this life than bad coffee; a sentiment that the body at his feet would probably share, if it could talk.

The King's Jewel
It was all anyone in the kingdom could talk about for months: Princess Lovely was finally of marrying age. King Kaiser's subjects were all abuzz with gossip and questions about her once the decree went out, as no one had been allowed to look upon the princess for years. Some speculated that she'd died, and the royal family conducted her funeral in secret. Others suggested that she'd been disfigured in a tragic accident, hiding deep in the bowels of the palace out of shame. The most popular theory, however, was that her beauty was so great the king kept her prisoner; believing no other soul was worthy to look upon her.

Seeing Is Believing
Joanie pulled her threadbare wool coat tighter around her as she walked, rubbing her numb, red nose with a sniff. Her feet were killing her after being on them all day, but sadly she couldn't go home yet. She still had one more shift to go. One more long, exhausting shift, to cap off the longest, most exhausting day of her life so far.

The Ice Cream Fairy
The air conditioner droned incessantly in the window, filling the apartment with a constant, grating hum. Although it gave a medal-worthy effort, the cool air it produced was immediately swallowed by the sticky, hot, stagnant atmosphere. Natasha debated whether or not to just turn it off entirely; the temperature seemed no different either way, and at the very least it would give her peace at last.

A Walk Through The Garden
Victor awoke with a terrified gasp, barely holding back a scream. He snapped up to a sitting position immediately, fueled by fear and adrenaline, then cradles his woozy, swimming head in his hands right after. In hindsight, sitting up so fast was not a smart idea. With a groan, he pivoted around and set his feet on the floor, bending over until his head was between his knees. It felt like his brain had been put in a blender on frappe; his stomach was doing flip-flops under his ribs, and his ears were filled with a shrill, high-pitched whine that refused to go away. By the time he got his breath back and the world stopped spinning like a Tilt-O-Whirl, he realized that whine was not a whine.

Pre-Wedding Jitters
"...and the ceremony would take place here," Jill breezed past the ballroom at a fast clip, almost faster than Rosie could keep pace with. That wide, plasticky grin stayed on her Botox-filled face the entire time, her decoupaged clipboard tucked tight under her flabby arm. "Oh, and out here is the garden. Just look at all those flower buds! They should all be popped out by the big day. Can you imagine what a gorgeous backdrop that would make for pictures?!"

The Good Samaritan
Rain pelted the windshield as Georgia sped down the pitch black road. Between the glare of headlights from oncoming traffic and the water sheeting over the glass, visibility was nil. Her right hand gripped the wheel so tight, her knuckles ached. Still, she didn't dare let go, holding onto the worn leather like a lifeline. Her left stayed on her tight, perfectly round belly, massaging constant circles into the side of it. When a fresh wave of pain swelled through it, she bit her lip and groaned deeply through it.

Sixteenth Summer
I really have no idea what the hell happened. That summer was supposed to be the summer. For the first time ever, I had made friends. Our penny-pinching school had finally sprung for a class-wide trip, the first ever I had been on. Two whole weeks in Disneyworld: nothing but sun, fun, and the hottest girls in my class strutting their stuff in bikinis around the hotel swimming pool. What more could a sixteen-year-old guy ask for?

Bailey's Back. Runner-Up in The Second First Time Challenge.
The sun shone brightly on the Alabama Gulf Coast that day, sparkling like a string of diamonds on the deep, blue-green water. Bailey stole glances at it as she drove, mostly because she just couldn't help herself. She hadn't seen the Gulf of Mexico in over ten years. Not since she left home and traveled north for college.
