The Prompt

This challenge goes beyond the typical “before and after” exercise. Share an excerpt that you consider both imperfect and brimming with potential, and then peel back the layers of your creative process through a thorough self-analysis. In your self-edit, illuminate the deliberate choices you made—whether it’s breaking conventional grammar, defying narrative structure, or experimenting with tone—to transform your work.

Discuss the risks you took, the uncertainties you faced, and how these creative gambles have shaped your writing. Your reflection should not only critique your own work but also offer insights into the artistic decisions that pushed your boundaries. Aim to be raw, intellectual, and brave as you reveal the inner workings of your creative mind. Let your analysis serve as both a personal exploration and a guide for others striving to break free from literary conventions.

For your story to be eligible, it must be between 500 and 1,500 words and adhere to our Community Guidelines.

Stories published on Vocal and entered into the Challenge up until March 27, 2025 at 11:59 PM EST will be entered for consideration. Official Rules for the Challenge can be found here.
