south america
Between its wonderous mountain ranges, remote islands and the world's biggest rainforest, your first trip to South America likely won't be your last.
A Secret Sand Dune in a Green World
When we turned in the direction of the sun and sand, a gust of wind blew two startled Burrowing Owls across the road in front of us. How we laughed to see their wide eyes as they tumbled head over heels before they caught themselves to fly back into the trees. Then the road opened, and our eyes went just as wide, albeit with a different kind of wonder.

Trip to Peru, Part 1
I have the best travel partner in my life: My soon-to-be-20-year-old son. I'm pretty sure he will soon tell me that he wants to travel with his friends rather than me, but we still enjoy each other's company while traveling, especially abroad. Between 2011 and now, we've had amazing adventures together in Ireland, Turkey (Istanbul), Germany, and Brazil. Not to mention multiple trips to Russia and Central Asia where I come from. My son is a college student, I'm a college professor, so we both have good winter and summer breaks and before the pandemic we always traveled somewhere far away.

The Pantanal (World's Largest Tropical Wetland)
Heavy rains fill the vast Pantanal Basin each year, creating a vast flooding landscape. During the hottest season, when the region receives the most rainfall, wetlands and the Pantanal Basin can fill up to 80% of the water. In contrast, during the dry season, most of the water in the basin drains into the Paraguay River. The Paraguay River, which is the main source of water for the wetlands, flowing directly through the Pantanal, has seen the greatest changes in water levels on its surrounding banks and shores.

Not Quite Carnival! (Travel from Home #13)
I was deciding between fake traveling to Peru or to Brazil in July. The deciding factor ended up being a book set in Brazil that I desperately wanted to read. So I spread my travel from home trip to Brazil over two days (though it took me until early August to finish the book).
