The Comeback City

Over the past five years, crime in the major downtown area of Detroit has gone dramatically down as new businesses flourish. Metro-Detroiters are already enjoying the new gem that is Downtown, and now it's your time, too, so here are four reasons to visit the beautiful and historic Motor City.

My First Mountain
If you look far to the right you can see the start of Mount Rainier, the mountain that ascends 14,410 feet above sea level. Rainier is an active volcano and is also the most glaciated mountain in the US. If it were a more clear day you could see the great city of Seattle. Who doesn't love Seattle? Before the morning fog came in I was able to see the space needle and the ferries going from port to port. The views were breathtaking on this mountain.

Autumn in Michigan
I lived in Michigan many years ago. Initially, I didn't want to move to Michigan because I was in the suburbs of Detroit and couldn't imagine anything worse than that. Before I moved there, I envisioned gray - just gray. Well, I ended up loving it. The suburbs of Detroit are like anywhere else - with all the shopping and restaurants you need and nice neighborhoods to walk in - with several parks splattered here and there.

Air Travel Today
As a former flight attendant, believe me when I tell you that I have seen it all when it comes to traveling on a plane. It is as if people become someone that you do not recognize. It is understandable when we are required to release ourselves to a total stranger. These planes take us from A to B, and we have no idea who is flying them. I can assure you that these people are highly qualified. It takes long hours of flight and classroom training before you can fly a commercial airplane. Most pilots are former military, and have plenty of experience flying. Your flight attendants have a lot of training as well. You should put down your book, magazine, whatever you might be doing, stop talking, and listen to what they are saying. If not for yourself at least out of respect for the people that are sitting near you. They are not doing that safety demonstration for themselves. They already know everything that there is to know about that. Remember if anything goes wrong these are the people who are going to help you. They know those planes, you don't, so you are going to need them.

Filthy Cities – Industrial New York
New York City. “The Capital of the World” to some, “The City So Nice They Named It Twice” to others, but most importantly, the city people escape to in hopes of pursuing the American Dream. However, back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, New York City was not as upstanding or charming as it is today. The documentary Filthy Cities: Industrial New York by Andy Robbins, produced by BBC, portrays the struggles poor immigrants faced when arriving in New York City. Fleeing persecution and poverty in their previous countries, what they faced in NYC was even worse. From money-grubbing landlords, repulsive slums, and cramped tenements, immigrants had to fight disease, corruption, exploitation, parasites, and many more grueling conditions. It is appalling, the nightmarish circumstances the immigrants desperately tried to withstand, with many of them not making it out alive. For New York to continue as a city, various people, like inventors and reformers, would have to step up with inventions, ideas, and reformation.

Kauai
We opted to take the red eye flight out of Vegas to Kauai to make sure we could take advantage of as much of each day of the trip. To those worried about not being able to sleep on the flight, no worries. Kauai has some of the best coffee in the world grown right on island—enjoy! Landing on Kauai with our first beach stop at Poli Hali, naturally we picked the beach with a four-mile dirt road entry as the very first spot to head! We enjoyed a few hours of decently aggressive shorebreak with maybe another six people within sight along over 14 miles of beautiful beach. This beach is actually only a few miles away from our next destination: the Napoli Coast, back behind those rather large volcanic cliffs in the background of the photo below:
