US Election: GOP remains divided

Republicans, as Trump spirals, continue to ignore the obvious

United States: President-elect Joe Biden views President Donald J Trump’s refusal to concede the 2020 Presidential Election as “an embarrassment” to the American people. All the major American television networks eventually called the election for Biden. Trump has not been able to stomach the result.

Republican US Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) Ben Sasse (R-NE), and Mitt Romney (R-UT), not in Trump's camp, broke ties with the now lame duck president a long time ago.

Romney, on Sunday, 8 November 2020, called for the nation to "get behind" Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

Meanwhile, based on Trumps Twitter activity, there is no sign the lame duck president has any intent changing his mind.

Trump, after tweeting a video clip of Laura Ingraham spouting right-wing rhetoric, tweeted in caps “WE WILL WIN.”

Ingraham talks about Biden having said "America last." The brief clip Ingraham uses on her Fox News show, with Biden refencing world leaders having contacted him, is held up as evidence of the president-elect being unAmerican.

The tone Ingraham takes in her show clearly suggests she is talking to an audience of one: Donald J Trump. Trump and Fox News, over the past few days, have seemingly possessed a rocky relationship.

Fox News quick Arizona call for Biden, something Trump supporters found offensive, didn't go unnoticed by either the president or the Trump Campaign.

Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and a senior White House adviser, placed a call to Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch to complain about the decision to call Arizona for the former vice president.

Howard Kurtz, a Fox News media correspondent, confirmed on Sunday that the call took place. The news network is likely trying to mend fences with Trump, the Trump Campaign, and his supporters. Many Republicans are in serious denial.

“Republicans, don’t let Andrew McCabe continue to get away with totally criminal activity,” Trump tweeted. “What he did should never be allowed to happen to our Country again. FIGHT FOR JUSTICE!"

“I’m here to stand with President Donald Trump,” Republican United States Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said in a Fox News interview. “He stood with me. He’s the reason we’re going to have a Senate Majority.”

...

“Pennsylvania’s three-day,” former United States Solicitor General Ken Starr, “extension of the mail-in ballot deadline is a Constitutional Travesty.”

It is curious the former US solicitor general should think, when it clearly speaks of being undemocratic, "to count every vote may be a crime ... under federal law."

Republicans apparently believe Democrats are guilty of voter fraud. Could they be projecting?

It is not beyond a Republican to accuse others of activities they themselves engage in daily.

“President @realDonaldTrump’s @POTUS pursuit of voter fraud is not only essential to determine the outcome of this election, it is essential to maintain our democracy and restore faith in future elections,” Republican Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick of Texas tweeted.

If Democrats had been seeking to rig the election, something they are being accused of, it would be unlikely they would have allowed either Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Graham to retain their respective seats. That isn’t how rigging elections works.

The reason many US Senate Republicans refuse to recognise Biden as president-elect comes down to the two US Senate seats up for grabs in Georgia. Presently, ahead of the two Georgia runoff elections scheduled for January, it looks like Republicans will retain control of the US Senate.

“[Trump has] a vested interest in making sure we keep the majority,” US Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) said.

The runoff elections, scheduled for Tuesday, 5 January 2021, will determine which party controls the US Senate.

Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff seeks to unseat incumbent Republican US Senator David Perdue (R-GA). Democrat challenger Reverend Raphael Warnock, scheduled for the same day, is looking to topple incumbent US Senator Kelly Loeffler (R-GA).

Will Cornyn get what he wants or will the Democrats control the United States Senate?
