It would be nice to live in fashion for once. I see those around me dominating the most recent fashion fad and wonder what it must be like to exist in their world. When you’re driven by an internal compass of aesthetic preference, finding yourself on the outside becomes commonplace. Once in a while though, just once in a while, the universe conspires to highlight your style as the new norm and suddenly you fit. The crowd joins you in your plaid jacket revelry or plain print tees, rarely at the same time but still, it’s a welcome change.

Bring Back Baby Phat!
I revisit brands often thinking about what brands were just awful from the start. I use my youth as to excuse most of it because hey, we were all kids. I think 90’s babies were the last group who spent their time dressing our appropriate age. Aeropostale in middle school was cool but the butterfly logo on a short didn't seem as if it would last too long. Bobby Jack shirts? Very middle-school like and I see how that faded as well.

My Moment in the Limelight
The Year at Hand … 2004. I was 16 years old. I was in grade 10. This was my second year of private school. I was surrounded by rich folks. Asian. White. Black. Brown. Everyone you could think of. They all had money and came from a wealthy background. The only traits I shared with them was that I am brown and I was there for an education, without my consent. Wealth or no wealth, barely scraping through the bills and sometimes living on money we didn’t have. That would not limit my education. But everything else in life the dollar saw an effect. One pair of sneakers a year, if lucky. The next one came when they fell apart! Clothes were hand-me downs from my two older brothers. A fashion sense was irrelevant and not even possible.

The Face of Pop In The 80's
I sit here and think back to my childhood, I was twelve and my brother was a year younger. The year was 1996, my brother and I were out of school for the summer, and were making one of our weekly quest to the Dollar General on the other side of Friarsgate, the small neighborhood we lived in. We went to buy candy and snacks with whatever money we could produce through the week, (picking change from the couch or doing random task for the neighbors around us), for the Saturday afternoon movie marathon that played on Fox. Our father did not believe in an allowance, forcing us to earn for ourselves, however with four children and little income this was understandable. The trips were always an adventure to us, making our way to the neighborhood tennis courts, then using a path behind it to get onto the railroad tracks that ran through the neighborhood and led us the rest of the way to shopping center where our destination was.
