If you are currently having serious doubts about whether your current career path can actually lead to a better place, you’re certainly not alone. Last April, a staggering four million Americans quit their jobs, according to the Labor Department. As the pandemic is nearing its end, another 27% are planning to leave their employers in the nearby future. The reason we’re collectively having second thoughts about our current jobs is the fact that working from home has given us a lot more time to think about if we’re actually enjoying what we’re doing, so it seems that COVID-19 has made us realize that life is too short to spend our lives doing something we don’t like. Where the stats show an obvious trend, it also leads to a snowball effect as many of us seem to jump the bandwagon without thinking their decision through. Although we absolutely encourage you to change career paths if you are truly unhappy, we also recommend taking a few of the following aspects into consideration first.

Hurry Up & Wait!
Dear egotistic being, We’re going against the grain with this one. I’ll tell you exactly what I’m going to do. I’ll try to identify your regressive defaults, bring them to life then shatter your world with how unnecessary they’re and then try to open your eyes to a nonverbal sense of guidance. I might throw in how you’ve been exposed to guidance already. Through verbal suggestions, choices, education, precautions and the mere unknowingness expressed by your immediate area and/or unpredictable people and places. Good thing you listened only AFTER the fact that the insight was helpful. But you relied (unconsciously; without effort) on your laziness to skip past the crucial helpfulness even with the most simple and brainless of advice to enhance you. That’s a lesson, like our last conversation, but it tips us into this new discussion. The emerging/emerged signs. Objective one done. This is going to be a hell of a ride, fasten your seatbelts.

There may come a time during your mental health recovery journey that inpatient psychiatric hospitalization is required. Thanks to the stigma we face, common misconceptions being passed as fact and a slew of other factors many of us look at mental illnesses differently than we do medical illnesses. In fact, it’s typical that mental illness is viewed as scary or dangerous...even contagious. I could (and believe me, I will) write an entire article on this aspect of mental health advocacy, but that is for another day. I bring this up, however, because stigma, misconceptions and other issues make the difficult decision to be hospitalized for your mental health even harder. This is serious because it literally involves matters of life and death, when we require inpatient care we are experiencing a life-threatening emergency.

The Downside to Being Goal-Oriented
Lately, I have been thinking about the dark side of grit and in particular how being goal-directed in the extreme can be a bad thing. If you are spending a large proportion of your 168 hours per week pursuing goals, you may be spending fewer hours savoring the present moment being mindful. So these strivers who are rushing around getting stuff done, are maybe less happy. Maybe they’re just missing out, right? I mean, let me ask you this, in a given day, what percentage of time that you’re awake do you think you are having goal-directed thoughts versus the percentage of time where you have no goal in mind? You’re maybe eating a really good piece of brisket.

You're not that important
About five years ago I did a ton of work on myself. Mental health mostly, but I also lost about 120 lbs. I felt great, looked great, and I was trying to make a habit of not concerning myself with superficial problems. One of my mottos (mantras, affirmations, whatever…) was that I'm not that important. And it helped me tremendously.
