Before transitioning, I was a depressed mess. Now I'm just a mess, so progress. I never really understood why it was an issue, but my identity has been a hot button issue for some time. If it wasn't for the media talking about it, I wouldn't have ever known what it was. No joke, when I was a kid, being AMAB (assigned male at birth), I thought I was a girl, but that didn't exist as far as I knew.
I had seen Buffalo Bill wear women's clothes and tuck and I thought that was not me. I had even seen a "shemale" in one of my dad's TNA magazines growing up and never really made the connection. Whenever a cross-dresser or a drag queen showed up as a punchline to a joke, I also felt alienated from the identity entirely. So I didn't see a lot of good representation throughout my childhood. The movie "Tangerine" directed by Sean Baker is pretty good. You should check it out.
So what do these transgenders want? Safety, healthcare, to be treated like we aren't a disease that needs to be eradicated, or that we have some kind of mental illness. The mental illness is from the trauma we endure, not something wrong with us. Trans people aren't new, we date way back. Like 5000 B.C. way back, there were the priests of the goddess Innana, Roman Emperor Elagabalus in 218 A.D., the Seven hermetic principles even have gender as one of the principles and that is like 2,000 years old. The last one is not a non sequitur, history is hard.
Why haven't we heard about it until now? Well, we've always been around, but back in Germany, circa right before the Nazis, there was the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft or Institute of Sexual Research, which advocated for transgender people and performed gender-affirming surgeries until youth brigades burned their research in the street. You can imagine what happened to the patients, so I'll spare you.
Fascism really doesn't like transgender people. But why? It's because gender expression outside the heteronormative view makes you think. They don't like thinking or reading, then you'll have ideas, cats and dogs living together. You get it.
I get that you may not like the idea of minors choosing their gender identity or at least them transitioning before they are adults. I don't like what people in our government have done with children, so I get it. At this point, you can sign a document and die in another country to pad an oil tyrant's pocket book before you can drink or smoke, so, what do I know? I also heard they are trying to lower the age of minors for some reason, eh hem, not for nefarious reasons I assure you.
What about God? I heard Jesus loved everyone and what was that whole, "Judge, not lest thou be judged" thing he said. Also, "Love thy neighbor as thyself." I don't have to do every religion, do I? Believe what you want, but there is supposed to be a separation of church and state for a reason. It's so religious fanatics don't try to make a free thinking nation bow to a document written in the Bronze Age which was translated from languages that don't exist anymore and interpreted by people that have their own biases.
We have amendments for a reason and, last I checked, progress was a good thing. It's always been two steps forward, one step back, but we seem to want to backflip off of a mountain for some reason, and it's distressing. Legislating what we can do with our bodies and if we can participate in sports or the military or what room we can pee in is making the government very big people who want small government. Why is it the small government people want more laws? Why do the libertarians want fewer regulations but more control over bodily autonomy? Why gun okay but me wear cute dress not?
In closing, the pickle joke is related to spironolactone. It's a diuretic, made me climb the walls like a cat in heat. It's supposed to make your boobs bigger, but oddly makes you too weak to open the jar. Thank you, stabbing a knife through the top of the jar because those pickles are mine. It did me no favors, sad face.
