Stay Small

A short poem about childhood

I know you think

That you can’t wait to be bigger

That's not true. You’re wrong. Stay Small.

Once you’re older you’ll wish you’re younger

You might get hit by a waterfall of emotional strife

But that’ll all be calmed when you dive into a pool–

Funny thing is the pool has a name; it’s name is Cora

She’s the person who wants to help you no matter what

So many times you’ll think it never gets better, you’re out

I wish I could tell you that it all becomes OK, but I can’t

The thing I can tell you is that wounds heal if you wait

The stinging gash stops stinging in time, I promise

If you just take your time everything works out

Don’t push yourself towards something

Grow into the shoes you fill

Wait to grow big

Note to readers: the poem was origionally written to form a circle, but since Vocal does not allow you to center text on the page, it now follows more of a sine curve. If you'd like, feel free to copy and paste it into a google doc or other editor, then center the text on the page. It was written specifically to fit this circular form, so please enjoy the full effect of the poem if you'd like.
