Opening the Door to Love

Don't be alarmed. It is only love

That feeling

Can you sense it?

It approaches softly

So quiet, so sudden

no words it will speak

you won't know its there

Like a sudden touch on the shoulder

Don't be alarmed

As startling as it might be

It is only love

A visitor at your doorstep when you least expect it

Do you open the door? Open your heart?

Or bolt the door and your heart?

Don't be alarmed. It is only love

A familiar stranger you've met a lifetime ago

Or a face so unfamiliar, one you've never met in your life

It will come radiated in a warmth you'll want to lean into

It will draw you in

you might even desire it, long for its presence

You might think

It's moving too slow, not moving at all

You stand impatient, conflicted

beckoning it to move faster towards you

While loves approaches often without warning

Let it approach on its own time, its own pace

Let it happen almost as naturally as breathing

It might take time

It will take time

Love can't be forced nor can it be rushed

And when you least expect it, it will be there

until you're standing face to face

So quiet, so sudden

Approach it with caution but don't be alarmed

It is only love

Wow. I loved this. Love, honest, slow, humble and in its most quiet, truthful forms. Very well written.

  • Such a beautiful poem. Congrats on such a lovely top story

Approach it with caution, it's only love. Nothing can be as rewarding, and nothing can hurt you more. Congratulations on Top Story!! Well deserved!

The line “a visitor at your doorstep when you least expect it” really stayed with me, especially paired with that choice of opening the door or bolting it shut — it felt uncomfortably familiar. I’ve definitely had moments where love showed up gently, and I still panicked like something bad was about to happen instead of something good. I like how you remind us that love has its own pace, almost like breathing, and that our impatience can sometimes get in the way of noticing it’s already there. When you were writing this, were you thinking about a love you welcomed… or one you almost didn’t let in?

I need to check the hinges. It's been so long since that door was used.

I loved the repeating line “it is only love” as if that tames it and makes it easier to tolerate or accept. I loved the softness you offered in this, almost like a mediation on allowing life into your life. Wonderful poem!
