Jerry

backyard friend

By Andrea Corwin Published 3 months ago 1 min read
Jerry

tree frog is a chair frog

appearing in spring to claim his throne

hidden behind a pillow in day

roaming grass and reeds by night

but as the sun rises, he leaps to his

seat and settles for his sleep

each autumn we know he will leave

digging into leaves and earth

changing from green, adding hints of brown

hiding his figure from those who plan harm

I named him Jerry and look each day to see if he’s left to hide away

Jerry watches from a place unseen

and when he deems it warm and safe enough, his chair is waiting

all know to quietly, warily take a quick peek for him behind or under the cushion before taking a seat

I sit in another chair; for what do I care that he has claimed the softer one?

I gladly share my private preserve with all of nature’s critters, the birds and bees, reptiles and amphibians, ladybugs, dragonflies, and butterflies

I fan away the stinging or biting bugs and admire the webs of the spiders, knowing the pests may be her dinner, and hoping the beneficials are not.

Jerry and his friends sometimes sing from their secret alcoves, letting me know they are near.

we smile at night, snuggled in bed, when we hear the night creatures murmuring

Horned owls, coyotes, and softly, sometimes Jerry joins in

A tree frog is better than a mouse I suppose at this time of year. Love those sounds that you get to listen to each night before it gets too cold. Good work.

I love this and little frogs so much. When I was very little, we had a bunch of frogs in our backyard - we foud them under rocks. They disappeared for years, but lately, they've started to re-emerge in my hometown.

It's wonderful how you've created a little shared world with all the creatures and how much you care for nature right outside your door. The line about being a "private preserve" and the nightly sounds are so sweet.

Very nice, Andrea. A pet frog, that is cool.

What a great friend to have and how respectful you are of his preferences. A very fortunate frog to have you as a friend and comfort provider
