humanity
Isn't it ironic that the very best of humanity is seen through the love and empathy we show to our pets?
Just a Dog
My father is the reason I love dogs so much. Well, perhaps not the only reason, but a huge contributing factor. We had several dogs as I grew up, and some of them were mine, but others were definitely my fathers. We didn’t always have dogs growing up, but the ones we had very memorable for different reasons. Two of the most memorable were his, one was his protector, the other was something else. I think the two that my father owned that had the largest impact on my life were these two. But there was another one that I barely remember, but I still somehow loved it. That dog had a profound effect on me as well and colored how I would see the animals. His name was Wilbur.

Just a Dog
I’ve loved dogs since I first realized what they were, four-legged loyal companions that were silly, dump, and just lovely creatures that were both protectors and friends. As I get older my love for them increases, to the point now where I feel the need to become more active in the pet community and make strides to both understand them better and volunteer my time to help them. My experience is my own, though similar to folks that live in rural areas no doubt. There’s something unpolished about how the treatment of dogs in rural communities. Many people don’t give them the respect they deserve, though it depends on the person.

Angel Haven
Imagine if you can a 5 story brick building in the middle of 5 acres of land with fencing all around at about 7 feet high. At the north end of the land there is a beautiful man-made lake with benches and a small dock to fish off of. At the east end of the land you see a small little forest of Evergreen trees and weeping willows, with a trail going towards the southern end of the land. The west end of the land is all open fields, lots of space to run around and just have fun! As you walk up the front walk way you see a large sign "Angel Haven".

Cat for You
The most interesting tattoos seem to have a story or association with a person, place, thing, or memory that is forever etched as an illustration. For someone who doesn’t have a single tattoo, I am fascinated by others’ accounts of what the symbolism on their bodies represent for them, the “why” behind each work of art. Surely there are those who may not have explanations for their tattoos – maybe they just chose certain designs for pure aesthetic qualities – but the tattoos that do carry stories for the people who welcome them onto their bodies like canvases, those hold a special quality worth more than 1,000 words.

A Vet Tech's Farewell to Her Best Friend
I am a veterinary technician. This means I educate pet owners and non-pet owners alike. I answer questions, take vitals, collect blood, urine, stool, skin cell (or other cytology) samples, give vaccines or other injections, keep medical records up-to-date, admit and monitor sick patients, place catheters, administer medications, take radiographs, administer sedatives and local anesthetics, induce anesthetic planes, and provide recovery care. I must have a good math and science skill set; my calculations and knowledge must be accessed accurately and efficiently executed in even the most adrenaline-rushed situation.

The Bottom of the Planet
I celebrated the beginning of my 42nd orbit of the Sun by visiting Santa Barbara, CA where my lovely friend treated me to a reiki session. I’d never even thought of reiki before but since it was already set up for the day of my birth I was kind of looking forward to it. That morning I found myself in the dentist’s chair and returned home in time for my session with a numb face. Not to worry, my reiki therapist assured me it was fine, my face was not needed for the session. I knew my therapist was only told two things about me: my name is Amber and today is my birthday. As the session progressed she was saying things that really hit home, she called out my parental relationships to a tee. Then as she passed over my lower legs she made a startled noise and laughed a little. I asked what that meant and she told me she has seen spirit animals in other sessions and only a few have been birds but just now she swore a penguin leapt out at her. This made me laugh and I admitted to her I was going to work in Antarctica in just a few months.

The elephant in the room
Elephants have always been my favourite animal, everyone around me knew this, though most people never knew why. I was never close to any of my father's side of the family, they didn't want to have anything to do with us and quite frankly the feeling was mutual. But there was always one person who never let us believe we were unwanted or unloved, he made sure we knew that he loved us and that we were important to him.

WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM ANIMALS
We can learn so much from wolves! They live so closely as a “Pack” (or family) that it is impossible to break the pack. True, there is the dominant ‘alpha’ pair --- but someone needs to be in charge. Siblings babysit siblings, caring for their little brothers and sisters. And when it’s time to hunt, the pack will hunt and feed together.
