The Functional Art:Introduction & Chapter 1 Response
This week's reading for my 'Introduction to Infographics and Data Visualization' class were the Introduction and 1st chapter to Alberto Cairo's The Fuctional Art. The book's introduction explains four major themes concerning using infographics correctly. Some of these themes include proclamations like how 'The brain doesn't process info that comes through the eyes, but creates mental images that allow us to reason actions that facilitate survival' or that 'Graphics, charts, and maps aren't just tools to be seen, but to be read and scrutinized.' The two chapters also explain the foundations to using infographics as an operating work of art by using their visuals to communicate the systematic facts found in another intellectual's research. The main reason many publications, authors, and scientists, and specialists in academia use infographics to visualize their theories consists of the basic fact that visuals with a satisfactory summarization facilitate the mind better learn a new idea or theory. Cairo includes a chart in The Functional Art's first chapter depicting the process of an image transitioning to basic, uninterpreted info into knowledge into wisdom, relating how data visualization is a crucial method to speed up this process in tandem with the data's original results. The most intersting tidbit I received from the reading is when Cairo explained towards the end of the first chapter that, "the role of an info architecht is to anticipaate the process and generate order before people's brains try to do it on their own." Basically, info designers use their work to accelerate the brain's decoding of factual information, rather than letting the reader decode it based off their personal opinion. It helps provide an objective opinion, if used correctly, to the research without having to fight through using objective language.

Australia's Healthcare System Versus America's Healthcare System
As the population’s life expectancy continues to rise, the elderly are developing more chronic health issues. Both the U.S. and Australia are faced with providing accessible, affordable, quality healthcare for their citizens. The U.S. healthcare system is one of the most expensive systems in the world with health expenditure as a percentage of the gross domestic product of 17.7 in the year 2010 (Niles, 2015 p. 60). Australia on the other hand had health expenditure as a percentage of the gross domestic product of 8.9 in the year 2010 (Niles, 2015 p. 59). While Australia runs a universal healthcare program which has proven to be successful, the U.S. has attempted some wobbly steps toward achieving universal healthcare, but is far from the strong strides which are needed.

Customer Service
I was supposed to be writing a book about customer service and experience for the past … oh that’s not good, I can’t remember which is an indication of how long it’s been, whew child. The book was supposed to be my springboard into my own business consulting firm as I was going to be revolutionary in my approach. After 20 years in sales and customer service I am confident that I have gained enough knowledge and experience to teach and coach businesses on how to increase their profits through the action of customer service. Simple enough. I started to write the book and if memory serves me correctly I have a few chapters. Here’s the hiccup, my heart is not in adding to the multitude of publications already out there about customer service and customer experience that apparently no one is really buying or fully implementing.

Me? A Mobile App Developer?
The mobile development industry is a unique force that is driven by several influences, yet has no real ‘landing point’ or ‘complete’ button and loose directional boundaries which are usually carved from post-reactive legislation. The technology is accessible (everyone has a phone), applications are easy to install and there are several to choose from (complete with pictures on your app store) and it is not age biased (younger generations are often more adept at optimizing the technology opposed to older generations). I see the mobile development industry as continuing to advance at remarkable speed as its subscribers continue to grow, acclimate and demand more of technology. After all, according to MobileAppDaily.com, “The social media world is the second largest place filled with people after the physical world in the entire universe (excluding the alien possibility).” This is just one facet of mobile development. Developer-tech.com has also seen hyper-casual gaming on the rise, “...these games now have the highest number of installs on average in 50 percent of the top global markets. For context, last year they only had the highest number of installs in the top 20 percent.” The increase of several different areas within the global scope of mobile application equates to dramatic changes in short periods of time. The mobile development industry is explosive, dynamic and interactive and as the world challenges the developers, the developers are attempting to keep pace like ducks on water (calm on the surface, feet moving wicked fast beneath). In this industry it is an absolute requirement to have the foresight to see an opportunity and to have the ability to capitalize on it.

Choreographers, Welcome to the Future
When the young dancers of today grow up and become producers and dance studio owners, they will buy choreography online. They will no longer nab sequences from YouTube videos nor wish they could have permission to copy whatever genius performance they saw on stage. Instead, they will buy the rights to their favorite choreography directly from their laptop or mobile device. Choreographers get paid, legal licenses are given out to the buyer, great dance flourishes like never before, and everyone is happy.
