Why I Decided to Become a Teacher
We are running out of teachers. Good, passionate, serious teachers. Either they’re simply growing older and caring less or the younger ones are giving up way too easily. Most people look at me funny or try to change my mind when I tell them I’m currently studying to become an English teacher; a high school educator, to boot. Time after time I hear: “Oh! Are you SURE you want to teach? I mean, in this day and age you’d be so disrespected and the kids are insane.” When as a matter of fact, those same reasons you wouldn’t be a part of the school system, are the reasons I will be.

In the past, finding and following a career path was easy. Once an individual selected their specific life track, they simply followed that singular choice through to the finish line. Unfortunately, today’s world is much more complicated, with the average individual making approximately four to seven career changes before settling into a more permanent position. Especially with the current emphasis on achieving a solid work-life balance, finding the perfect job is critical in achieving absolute happiness and life satisfaction. As a result, it feels like everyone is constantly changing jobs, making a lot of us wonder if it is time we do too.

It is sometimes difficult for us to see when we are ready for a change in our lives. If we just take a step back and assess the situation, we usually get a better perspective. I spent years of my life thinking I was happy and in a longterm career only to realize it was actually the reason for all the suffering I was feeling. From personal experience, I can say that it can sometimes be impossible to tell the difference between the need for a career change or just going through a phase of boredom.

Changing Careers. Top Story - August 2018.
I was never the type to have a five-year plan or clearly defined goals when it came to my career. I had one goal growing up which was to go to University, actively encouraged to do so by my parents although my decision was also influenced in part by the TV show A Different World. Silly but true. I even changed my choice of degree throughout the process as I started off wanting to study Journalism and then switched to Psychology and Criminology. But I was fortunate enough to be of the generation in which you could study something purely out of interest and not because it had to result in a job. I reasoned I would use those three years to explore the idea of being a probation officer or work in a completely different field (I ended up doing the latter).

Barb's Barbs
We knew when she stumbled in at 5 AM that she would be trouble. With an unruly mop of curly brown hair that declared open war on conventional notions of hygiene, a sallow face, and the attire of someone more likely to be a guest of a nearby condemned house, she did not possess the appearance of a normal guest. She, however, had a reservation, and that was the most relevant factor. While the normal guest at the Hilton-branded hotel would be in a dress shirt or a chic dress, money, not fashion reigned supreme. Front desk agents aren’t judges of character or arbiters of sartorial splendor. And Eugene is an odd enclave of artistic self-reproach. Barb was one of the reasons we played a game behind the desk, where we guessed whether someone was a business owner or a homeless person. You just never knew.

How to Make a Living in the Arts in 2018
Probably millions of people around my age (Millennial/Gen Z) have thought about ditching the traditional nine to five and making a living with their creative passions, whether it'd be writing, music, painting, or recycled-materials basket weaving. But it's a daunting prospect to actually experiment and see if you'll generate enough, or any, income off of it. So as someone who has managed to gain a decent part-time (and soon to be full-time) income off of their passions, I'll give all of my fellow dreamers the best advice I can to making a living as an artist/creative in the digital age!

Only the Rich Can Afford to Write
Shocking statistics released earlier this week reveal that despite an increase in book sales, authors are not receiving much money in return for their hard work. Authors are now suggesting that if something doesn't change, writing books might simply become too poorly paid for anyone to continue doing it.
