You'll Never Be a Writer
1 I sat in his office surrounded by half graded papers, shelves of books, and a layer of dust. His office seemed to be the smallest in the building and shoved into the farthest corner of the English Department building. I’d had a hard time finding him, and now sitting inside of it with him, the room didn’t seem to fit us. I shifted uncomfortably in my chair, staring at him with open and hopeful ears.

What I Wish I Knew About Writing When I Started. Top Story - January 2021.
I’ve been writing a novel for over a year now. I know, I know. That’s way too slow. In my defense, it’s my first novel. I’ve made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot on the way. I went from floundering to having a clear path to the finish line in less than a month and I’m a week away from finishing my first draft. Here’s a few things I wish I’d known when I began writing.

Law Enforcement
To start with I'm never going to say I'm against the police any more than I would say I'm against any group of people based on their professions, their beliefs, or how they look. Scrolling through ideas as I explore this world of writing called Vocal, I realized that some of the most interesting opinions or views I might have to offer are from my experiences in Law Enforcement and Corrections. The sentiment on the wall in the photo above, is one that I feel like most the men and women wearing a badge have suffered. The words and sentiment "Fuck the Police" seem to feel more evident today than they ever have in my lifetime, especially with the year behind us.

When it Comes to Characterization, Go Deep or Stay at Home
“Think of your main characters as dinner guests. Would your friends want to spend ten hours with the characters you’ve created? Your characters can be loveable, or they can be evil, but they’d better be compelling.” ~ Po Bronson

I worked as a telephone psychic & tarot reader
In 2015 I moved back to America after a decade of living abroad, off and on. When I was abroad one of the biggest selling points on my resume was simply that I was a native speaker of English. In America that obviously didn’t count for much. I needed to figure out a new line of work and I stumbled around for a year trying to figure out what I could do. While I was looking for new work, I also had it in my head that it would be great if I could figure out how to get money without all that messy “labor” business. It was from this standpoint that I gave being a telephone psychic a try.

How-To Not Make $10,000 A Month As An Internet Writer
Well, first off, I’d like to know where this arbitrary number of $10,000 a month came from. Every other article in my feed is how to make 10k, how I got a million followers, how I’m so awesome, blah blah blah. I suppose it’s just as good a goal as any but let me be frank with you, It’s not realistic.
