Hamlin There Bro!!
A Day of Awareness about the Physical, Mental, and Environmental toll on our society..

👋🏾It’s EDB, that’s Erik DeSean Barrett; I was set to say how awesomesauce the world was. I was ready to go and begrudgingly congratulate, Josh Allen, and the Buffalo Bills. I was ready to say, what an asswhopping, y’all put on Joe Burrow, and the Bengals. I can’t, and by now, I am sure you know why. Damar Hamlin, the 24 year old football safety for the Buffalo Bills, collapsed on the field and went into cardiac arrest after delivering a tackle.
The Buffalo Bills selected Hamlin in the sixth round with the 212th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. He signed his four-year rookie contract with Buffalo on May 21, 2021. After playing a reserve role his rookie season, Hamlin became one of the Bills' starting safeties in 2022 after Micah Hyde suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 2.
Hamlin collapsed after tackling wide receiver Tee Higgins who rammed into him. (My God, the morning TEEs Having) Following the tackle Hamlin stood, took two steps backwards and dropped.
As he remained motionless, team trainers and paramedics rushed to his side within seconds. Hamlin was then placed on a stretcher and an ambulance came onto the field as most of the players from both teams came off the sidelines to kneel or stand around Hamlin.
- First responders initiated CPR and administered defibrillation to Hamlin on the field for 10 minutes.
- Hamlin was given oxygen, intubated, and administered an intravenous solution (IV).
- He was transported to University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center at roughly 9:25 p.m. EST, and was reported to be in critical condition.
In accordance with the NFL's emergency-situation rules, the game was suspended with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter and was postponed shortly after 10 p.m., about one hour after Hamlin collapsed. Fans began gathering outside the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center following his collapse. The lights on Paycor Stadium, the location of the game, were lit blue in honor of Hamlin.
I’m sure we all join together, wishing Darmarus a speedy recovery. We send our thoughts to his family. We hope for strength. Momma Hamlin. I don’t know if she saw it, or got the call. However way that went down, she def isn’t in a good mood today. His McKee Rocks fam, Pittsburg Central Catholic High, all of Pittsburg. Somebody call Kurt Angle; Get him to hold a vigil of hope, and resurrection..
And with that, we try to move on.. Seeing what else is happening in this seemingly forsaken world. Lets talk about Mark and Kym Hilinski. They are the parents of the late Tyler Hilinski; the then 21 year old Washington State quarterback before his 2018 suicide. Mark and Kim found themselves standing before yet another audience of young athletes with whom they need to share their story. Among the 100-odd people seated in Utah State’s auditorium-sized football meeting room is
- A head coach who earlier this year lost a son to suicide.
- A player who attempted suicide and lived.
- And another who thought about killing himself just this week.
Tyler Talks seeks to provide a world where mental health and wellness will be supported in parity with physical health, and prioritized in connection to athletic performance.
That is the vision for Mark and Kym who now exist in both the past and the future, They decided long ago..
It’s better to be lost in this world, trying to help people
Mark had made Why? his mission. He hired a data forensic firm to unlock Tyler’s phone and find his final searches. What he found—How to load an AR-15? Is an AR-15 really fatal?—hardly answered anything, and his quest dented his health but not his sorrow. He put on weight, which exacerbated his back pain, and he argued with Kym and Ryan and Kelly over his daily steps count. Sure, he’d already had a bovine valve inserted near his heart, but, he asked
Does that really matter, after everything?
The Moral of this is Sports is a dangerous game, both physically, and mentally. We owe it to our communities, our friends, our families, ourselves to do we can to make sure everyone is ok.
But let’s find some hope before we go. GRAB your proverbial passports; we’re headed to Canada. There along a busy street downtown is Mark Coreth’s life-size ice sculpture of a polar bear. It’s melting, revealing a fearsome-looking bronze skeleton underneath which is designed as warning:
Climate change is killing wildlife like polar bears, which depend on sea ice.
Now I know we are supposed to be looking for hope, but hang on a minuet. This is a good thing (Hey Martha Stewart; because officials from more than 190 countries met in the city for a conference known as COP15. Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, for long. It’s where governments hashed out a historic plan to halt the decline of ecosystems.
Scientists estimate that around 1 million species are at risk of extinction, some within decades, and populations of major animal groups, including birds and fish, have declined on average by nearly 70 percent in the last half-century. A new study, appearing in the journal Science Advances, found through modeling that the planet could lose as much as 10 percent of its plant and animal species by 2050.
NOW… Here my friends is where we find the good AWESOMESAUSE stuff.
- People are finally talking about biodiversity
- There’s more recognition that what’s good for wildlife is good for us
- There are more tools than ever to track plants and animals
- Many species and ecosystems are actually recovering
- Financial institutes are paying attention — and understanding that declining ecosystems hurt their investments
- Indigenous people and local communities are finally getting the spotlight
- More than 190 countries agreed on a landmark deal to help save nature
- FINALLY YOU AND I CAN LEARN MORE…
So may this be our mission today. Sounding the alarm about planetary sucide like Mark Coreth, or physical lost like Mark and Kim, or SENDING OUR THOUGHTS TO THE HAMLINS.. Can this be a day of esteaming others, over ourselves?
