single
Whether you're solitary by choice or simply unlucky in love, being single is complicated.
Pure Blue
I lie in bed waiting for him to get out of the shower, my wrists crossed above my head, one knee drawn up and out to the side with the other leg straight down like a flamingo sometimes stands. The comforter is pulled mostly over me with only my hands and the one naked knee poking out. I probably look like the victim of some heinous crime, but it's warm under here, and I'm only thinking.

Home
No gracias. Monica politely looked the street vendor in the eye to kindly beckon him away. She was a little suprised as the city park by the water was not an apparent tourist spot. Not but 24 hours before she had been sitting in her New York City apartment with the sole minded purpose of fleeing. It had happened again. Everything came crashing down. Her life. It started cracking. At first little by little and then there was a big hammer. Her usual routine was this - escape before all the shattered pieces fell to the ground.

Blue Heart Adventure
Today started like any other day. I woke up got dressed, ate, when to the bathroom and got ready to leave the house. It was a beautiful sunny June day in my northern rural community. It was so nice out I decided to walk the 5 blocks to work instead of drive. As I strolled down my road I found myself lost in thought and staring at my feet, when suddenly something blue caught my eye. I stopped and stared at what I first thought was a piece of rubbish on the road. It looked like it had been folded. As I inspected I realized I was looking at an origami paper heart. I picked it up and admired the craftsmanship, and found myself feeling a desire to learn origami. As I flipped it over in my hands a compartment opened showing another folded paper, this one was white. When I unfolded it, two stickers were looking back at me. One smiley face and one of Frodo Baggins. I stared puzzled, what could that mean? How strange I thought. Shrugging it off I continued on my way to work. When I arrived I continuously

Table for one
With the afternoon light through flooding through the windows, Madison reluctantly opened her eyes to acknowledge the day. With a groan and a somewhat more hungover than usual feeling, she was more disappointed than surprised to see where she had ended up. If she wasn’t awake before, she was now, as she adjusted her eyes to the unfamiliar surroundings, with the only thing familiar to her being an empty bottle of her favourite red wine, Merlot, on the bedside table.

Don't Cry Over Spilled Wine
It’s 9 pm on a Friday and you are lying in the middle of your living room floor on the rug. The tv plays 90 Day Fiancé in the background and you are half-listening. When you raise your arm and upper back to sip your glass of wine, static ripples along the arm and neck of the flannel pyjamas that you are wearing. The last text message on your phone is from your best friend “Want to hang out tonight?”. You had responded “Sorry, rain check? I have plans tonight.” Lies. Unless plans to watch TLC with your cats counts.

LOVE BY ARRANGEMENT
Harper was staring at me as I put on my hose and shoes. Her chin on her paws, her eyes pleading. I felt annoyed. I wanted to sit down, take off my dress and shoes and climb into bed. I despised dating especially first dates. I took a final gulp of my glass of merlot. I’d agreed to meet Ogden down the road at the winery and I was going to meet him. I put on my denim jacket over my black dress as I glanced at the mirror. My red hair looked wild and my eyes, green like a leopard’s according to my dad, flashed back at me defiantly. I walked out into the cool clear night; the stars were shining like tiny diamonds on black bark. The roar of the ocean made me want to drive down to the beach and skip my date. The sand would feel so good between my toes, but Ogden had been asking me out for weeks. Even though I had enjoyed our phone conversations and text messages, I wanted to be done with him. I was certain he did not look like his pictures and even more convinced that he wasn’t employed. I felt that I needed to look him in the eyes and tell him that I didn’t feel we had enough in common. After all, if I didn’t, he’d ghost me after he realized I wasn’t going to jump into bed with him.

The Wait
If I’m not mistaking, the last time I was on a date was maybe 3 years ago, around summertime. I wanted to say spring but that’s because I was sprung… I-was-sprung. It wasn’t my first date, but it felt like it. He did everything so effortlessly, as if he was homeschooled by his mom and every term, he had to take her made-up course titled How to treat a woman 101, which he aced of course, obviously. Or… maybe he was just really good at wooing any woman he pursued.

Rediscovery
When I was 19, I was so ready to move on and "be an adult.” I had been in long-term, live-in relationships since I was 16, so co-living with a partner wasn't new to me. I'd been living outside of my parent’s home for the better part of 5 years. When I met him, I was ready to shed my family name and settle down.

Corkscrewed
Returning to San Francisco after 10 years away was an adventure Patricia had looked forward to. Now that all the unpacking was done, and new furniture in place, she could settle in and enjoy her new apartment. After completing her first full week at her new job as a personal assistant, she strolled past all the big name shops they didn't have in the last town she called home. She went into one of her favorites and bought a set of crystal wine glasses as a reward for accomplishing so much in a short amount of time. She was looking forward to pouring the bottle of Wandering Giants merlot she treated herself to. She was not only a fan of merlot, but also the baseball team, so it seemed the perfect match for her first weekend back in the city by the bay.

The Modern Fairy Tale
As a female millennial, I’m associated with the generation that grew up with the renaissance age of animation. Animated movies are how my generation first viewed fairy tales and love. Shockingly, those films aren’t the literal model for how we view love as adults.
