A Very Modern Fairy-Tale
Roger Slone had a look of sheer terror she would never forget as he gasped for breath. Fearing the final page was about to turn, he sluggishly pulled the oxygen mask from his face. She fought him to place it back over his mouth but then released her grip when she sensed the distress this was causing him.

At All Cost
At All Cost Why had she done it; abruptly cut away, with blunt scissors, her elegant golden waves groomed since her early teens with obsession, counting inches not unlike a miser counting money. She had striped it black and white; its short stiff spikes standing erect as a skunk’s tail during combat. I could smell my own distaste, disappointment and motherly urge to tut tut rising thick in my throat like wads of wet cash, yet somehow, I swallowed dry-mouthed, depositing my concern.

Little Black Book
Though the morning air was cold it was, like a good apple, fresh, crisp, and pleasant. It gave Henry's arms goosebumps under his flannel sleeves but, also like a good apple, he didn't want to let the morning go to waste. The wind threatened to blow off his cap which he surrendered onto the gray, dusty dashboard where it would be safe; and now the wind tousled his dark hair that was getting too long and thick. This feeling he liked -- so long as his hair didn't whip his eyeballs.

The Journal
Gwendolyn decided to enter a writing contest. She had been told for years that she had great talent but she wasn't so sure they were telling the truth. She wanted a writing career. I mean, who wouldn't want a job where you can create new worlds and not have to leave your house. Her family and friends had been telling her to just put something out there. But Gwendolyn was afraid of the rejection. One day she saw an advertisement for a writing contest. She figured, 'let's give it a shot", she never expected to win. Priceless Treasures
It was early evening and the setting sun had cast the mountain in a golden haze. Wrinkled hands held tightly to a chest, which reflected the sun in such a way that it created a halo of light around the old man’s head. His arms grew tired; he hadn’t expected it to be this heavy. Or maybe it was him who had gotten weaker. He chose not to dwell on that, instead lowering himself onto the stump of what had once been a massive spruce tree. In his left jacket pocket was a small black notebook, the one item he always carried with him. Pulling it out, he ran his hand over the rounded corners of the notebook, mindlessly fingering the elastic closure. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes and allowed the memories to wash over him . . .

Hear Your Fortunes Change
Marcy Blaire sat on her porch waiting for the mail carrier. It was the third day in a row she sat in anticipation of the big delivery. It wasn’t as if she had better things to do. She was out of a job because she couldn’t keep her mouth shut and told one of the team leads to jump off a bridge. She didn’t think it was that serious, but HR told her it was a pattern of rude remarks and they terminated her employment. She couldn’t deny that she had a short fuse and vocalized it too often at work. She had always avoided curse words, but on more than one occasion she suggested inappropriate actions to those she felt were shit at their job. HR said she also scared some of her coworkers. So, it was a short goodbye. Now she sat waiting because she believed the strange woman at the end of a nameless road.

Like A Real Pirate
It was as if some invisible prankster had pulled the rug out from under her feet. Without warning, Everly slipped off the very last step of the carpeted stairway, falling right onto her side. Using her hands to regain that lost balance, she gave herself the extra push needed to get her back to her feet.

Pages from the little black notebook
Charlie blankly stared out her window into the Vinyard aisles. She had moved to the Okanagan valley a couple months ago from her Humbolt hometown, to be closer to her boy friend, Greg. She looked over at the little black notebook, then over at the little piece of paper that he tore out of it and wrote 7 measly words on it that read; “I’m sorry, Charlie. I’ve met someone else.”

Blood of a Rose
All-day at school I felt like something big was going to happen... something bad. I just didn't know what it was. I had a feeling deep in the pit of my gut. My friend lizzy tried distracting me. She was telling me about Amanda Shirlwind's latest boyfriend. Her story was interesting enough considering Amanda is the school slut and was an everyday gossip. Leaving her alone with your boyfriend could be a mistake that would likely cost you your relationship. I mean there is the occasional guy that turns Amanda down but that's a rarity among teenage boys.

Purple Inked Names
Tuesday morning just isn’t the same without a stop into the local coffee shop, notebook tucked under my arm and a delicately steaming cappuccino to help me pass the time into early afternoon. Except today isn’t Tuesday, after all, is it? No, it’s Wednesday. Somehow even my little black book and I can’t keep track of these awkward days passing a little too swiftly - even for me.
