Why Poor Things Didn't Become One of My Favorite Horror Movies
The adult graphic content in this film ruined the experience for me.

Poor Things was another Frankenstein horror story that was pretty original, focusing on the creation of a woman that slowly learns about her world as she starts to navigate on her own adventures. She leaves her home and her master to run away with a random man that introduces her to her sexual nature, and she finds herself taking delight in exploring her new life as a woman.
She continues to embark on more sexual endeavors, as she joins a brothel, where she meets new people and learns more about what she enjoys with her own customers. I get the message that the film was going for, it was all about female empowerment, and how comfortable one can be in their own body with exploring their sexual desires.
The only problem for me was how much of the graphic content was presented in the film.
I felt that the director overdid showing all of the graphic scenes, and while I know that these scenes were important for the message the film was going for, I don't think there was a need to see all of these scenes.
As a viewer, it got annoying so fast, and I started to grow uncomfortable with it. It sucked that I started to feel this way, because I really enjoyed Bella's character in the film. The world building was also super awesome to look at, and it was cool to see this dystopian world as Bella continued to go on her adventures with checking out the world, while exploring her powers as a woman.

I also liked how we got a backstory about the kind of person she was before her death, because it was pretty shocking to learn as a viewer. The main climax toward the end of the movie was a little nerve wracking, because I was so curious to know how Bella was going to get out of her situation. She found out that she had been married to a bad man, and that she had ended her life to escape from her husband.
Once he revealed his new plan with her, to treat her like his possession in a terrifying way, Bella makes her choice to not go back with him. Bella is able to fight him off by throwing a sedative that was meant for her back at her sadistic husband, and she is able to return home.
Even though she loses her father that had created her, she is able to be happy, and live with the people that care for her, as she implants a goat brain into her evil husband, who now eats grass on her property.
I was totally fine with all this craziness and weirdness of Bella's journey, because it did fit the awesome world building. It oddly made sense in this strange world, and it was hilarious how none of her loved ones questioned why her ex-husband was eating grass.
But would I watch this movie again???
I don't think so.
To be honest, I don't think of this movie much.
All because of the graphic content presented in the film.
It really took me out of the story so bad, and I feel bad about mentioning this, because the story was genuinely great, but we didn't need to see all of those scenes to get the message of the film. The director should have barely included some of these moments, and I'm sure that the viewers would understand what was going on, and still enjoy the movie.
Poor Things had a great premise, but the graphic content ruined the movie for me.

Interesting review Emy! I absolutely loved this film too, yep it was nuts but it did all feel true to the 'world' of the character. Personally the graphic sex stuff was surprising but it didn't ruin the film for me.
