Lamp Rey
Lamprey 1 Mell The lab was silent as the day of experiments and tests had come to an end, only junior researchers and janitorial staff remained as they cleaned up for the day. The last of the staff left, leaving just the guards who walked periodic patrols around the lab.

The Wishing Falls
The Wishing Falls October 17th was the last night I spoke to my brother. It's been two weeks now and as I hiked up the rampant river he was supposed to be camping at, I can't help but recall that last phone call. I remember being irritated that he called me so early in the morning, he was speaking nonsense and I was so tired from a party the night before I couldn't, or rather wouldn't make out what he was trying to tell me. He said he found all his Dreams beside the waterfall. I told him he needed to lay off the special brownies he's been into lately and to call me back in the morning.

The Monster Inside
I woke up in a hurry, drenched in sweat, my clothes glued to my body. This happened every once in a while, but it hadn’t since my wife left me. I turned to my right to look at the clock, in disbelief that it showed only 4:00 A.M. I got up from my bed and stripped down to my underwear as I walked towards the bathroom. My path blurred from my heavy eyes, yet that didn’t seem to stop me from reaching my destination.

The Phantom Barber of Pascagoula
There were some creepy occurrences that took place in Pascagoula three years into World War Two in the summer of 1942. It was a bit of a lurker of the nights. But thankfully, there were no throats cut. There were no people smothered with pillows where they slept, but they were some non-consensual haircuts afoot.

So Close
His lips were dry, so dry that they cracked and bled. The sailor looked up bleakly at the cloudy sky above, licking his lips and sitting up. He looked around, his eyes finding nothing suspicious in the water surrounding his dinghy. He looked up towards the horizon to the west and panicked when he saw the grey-blue waters of the ocean, never-ending in its size. Where did the island go?

Leviathan. Top Story - October 2021.
Sergey gazed out at the Kara Sea from the top floor of the lighthouse as dawn broke over the frigid waters. He was an old man. How many more sunrises would he see? Would he live to see any in a warmer, more pleasant part of the world? His retirement drew near. He welcomed it. At the same time, he felt the tundra was part of him: the long days alone, and the deep thoughts which resolved into a tranquil silence. He hoped he could take the tranquility of the tundra wherever he went, but wondered if the tumult of warmer climates and more populated areas would wear on him.

Taddies in the Lake
The Willis’s disappeared very mysteriously without a trace from the Highland Hills subdivision two years ago. The EPA cleaned up the community and it reopened soon after. Some of the former residents returned many did not. One late afternoon Taddie Willis walked out of the lake as though she had risen from the dead. Just strolled right out of the water with mud, decomposing leaves and other yucky stuff all over her. Her hair had grown a few inches however everything else about her was the same. She was still very masculine and awkward looking. When she was seen walking around the neighborhood in a trance Mrs. Hill noticed her and called the authorities. Once they arrived they attempted to talk to her however no response. She just stood in front of them all dirty and wet staring into space. Mrs. Hill gave a statement to the police that day, “she just walked out of the water like you see people do in the movies. She was all stiff like a zombie!” A few hours later at the hospital, the police had put together that she was indeed Taddie Willis from photos they had of her when they were looking for her family two years prior.

The Dog:
This story was originally published on Steemit.com under my user name Demonsthense It was a beautiful, cloudless day and I was 12 years old the first time I looked true horror in the face. At 43 years old, I have since seen much that should eclipse that day in my mind; a friend overdosing on cocaine before my eyes, a man burned so badly in an industrial press that his flesh slid from his bones like well cooked chicken. I have lain awake at night remembering the explosions and lights from the firefighting that I saw from the lookout post of my naval ship during the Serbian/Bosnian conflict in the early nineties. Still, nothing will ever erase the horror that I saw that bright summer day, long ago, when my beloved pet dog, Bandit, died.

The River's Gift. Top Story - October 2021.
The bark stung Ben’s hands as he dug furiously into soggy, clay-thick soil, the edges of his makeshift shovel crumbling away in rough splinters. Occasional raindrops were testing his patience with their staccato threats, each one a warning that the storm would be upon him soon.

Lakeside Escape
My week off started by renting a secluded cabin from Airbnb. Lakefront view from an enclosed deck, lots of trees, and a promise of wildlife sightings. I had booked it for a week, needing to get out of the city, disconnect, and clear my head. I hadn’t written anything in months. I had been so drowned in everything going on around me, that I felt I was suffocating. Writing was never going to make me rich but it got me out of my life and into my head, which is what I needed...desperately. There was no internet at the cabin, but there was power, so I still packed my laptop. I preferred to write out my ideas and then type out the actual stories. The ad on airbnb also said there would be a spotty cell reception, but there was a better signal five kilometers up the road if I needed anything.

The Birthday Hut
For as long as I can remember, I’ve visited the birthday hut. Every year on my birthday, when my parents go to sleep, I’d peek out my window, my eyes locked on the backyard grass. Waiting excitedly, my heart would skip with each blink. When suddenly, there it was. Its roof was made of layered straw, its walls wooden. And through a glassless window glowed a warm, orange light. My eyes would widen as it appeared from thin air. As to not wake my parents, I would tiptoe down the steps, although I wanted to run like the wind. Slipping out the back door, the grass would crunch beneath my feet as I approached it. The wooden door appeared to be hand carved, it’s indents sloppy. And the golden knob was scratched; long past it’s days of glimmer. It screeched as I turned it, the door creaking as it opened. The warm, comforting air wrapped around me like a hug as I stood in the doorway. In the middle of the room was a small wooden table with matching chairs for two. Towards the back of the room was a crackling fire that illuminated the hut. Over on a wooden counter stood tiny wooden jars that contained treats, ones that I would be allowed to eat each birthday. But my gift was always the best of all. And finally, dangling from the ceiling by his tail, was the birthday monster.
