Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon

"Day 1 #RebelMoon. It's begun." As filming on Zack Snyder's forthcoming sci-fi film Rebel Moon – starring Djimon Hounsou – gets underway, the visionary director has released a first look at the epic sci-fi film. On Tuesday, April 19, Snyder tweeted three behind-the-scenes photographs, including one of Hounsou's character, General Titus, to commemorate the start of filming for the Netflix’s 2 part feature. Along with the sneak peek from the film, the Batman V Superman director tweeted: "Day 1 #RebelMoon. It's begun.”

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon will follow a peaceful colony at the edge of the galaxy that sends a mysterious young woman to gather interplanetary warriors to fight a totalitarian dictator named Balisarius, who will be played by Rupert Friend, who will also appear as the Grand Inquisitor in the upcoming Obi-Wan series. Charlie Hunnam, Doona Bae, Jena Malone, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, Sky Yang, and Ray Fisher and Stuart Martin from Netflix's Army of the Dead spin-off Army of Thieves will join Friend and Hounsou.

The existence of the project was first reported in January of 2013. The purchase of Lucasfilm by Disney put an end to production plans for the film, set in the Star Wars universe. Snyder pitched the film to Netflix a decade later as an original intellectual property unrelated to Star Wars. He expressed the hope that the film might lead to a wider franchise. Rebel Moon was officially confirmed as a Netflix streaming film on July 6, 2021. Zack Snyder would direct it himself with his wife, Deborah Snyder producing. Snyder and Kurt Johnstad developed the story, while Shay Hatten would be writing the screenplay. The director revealed on September 2, 2021 that he was working on the Rebel Moon script.

Fans of the director, reacted positively to the film's announcement, with one fan comparing Zack Snyder to George Lucas first creating the Star Wars series, writing: "When George Lucas created Star Wars it was cause he couldn't do Flash Gordon. When Zack Snyder created Rebel Moon it was cause he couldn't do Star Wars. We're witnessing cinematic history. We're living it. Breathe it in.” Lucas has previously stated that he tried unsuccessfully to obtain the rights to produce a Flash Gordon film before instead focusing on Star Wars: A New Hope, while Snyder's Rebel Moon began as a Star Wars pitch before going in a different direction.

Zack Snyder was quoted, when the film was announced, "This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan, It's my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure.”

Rebel Moon is now in production and will debut on Netflix, however, no date has been set.
