Insomniacs’ After School: A Story of Belonging

Spoil-Free Anime Review

By animetipzPublished 12 months ago 3 min read

I came across this anime from an Instagram post. I am a sucker for cute romance anime and knew I had to give this show a watch. Right away, I was drawn into the cute charm, but this show left an impression on me that was unexpected.

Insomniacs’ After School

Storyline: A boy named Ganta and a girl named Isaki are insomniac schoolmates. Both worry about their constant lack of sleep. After a chance meeting in the school’s observatory-turned-storage room, the two share secrets, and begin having an unusual connection.Info: 5 episodes are out, and will be airing weekly

Genre: Slice of life, romance, drama

Rating: TV-14

This anime is the definition of wholesome. I love cute, romantic anime. However, I was shocked at how much depth this show had. We meet our main characters, and they immediately bond over their insomnia. As the show goes on we find out the deeper meaning behind their inability to sleep.

I loved that this anime didn't have the typical romance tropes. It had real situations, troubles, and comedy. The characters weren't perfect, they were real and relatable. It was an outstanding joy to watch them develop and grow as characters and in their relationship.

The art was incredible. With an unlikely turn of events, they start the astrology club, and we get transported into the most beautiful star-filled scenes. It almost didn’t feel like I was watching an anime in some scenes. For this to be a cute slice-of-life show they really went all out to give us a beautiful masterpiece.

When it comes to romance anime does it best. We don’t see a couple meet and then jump into a relationship. Instead, we slowly see their relationship blossom. They start with the similarities of being Insomnicas and then go onto this fun school adventure of starting the astronomy club. We see them work hard together to learn how cameras work and how to pick out the best spots to take pictures of the night sky. We see them go through disappointments together. We see them open up about why they are afraid to sleep and show each other empathy. There isn’t drama between them or conflict like in other anime. It is just wholesome to watch their love grow in real-time.

The last episode will have your heart exploding. I was screaming throughout the finish of their journey. You feel so attached to these characters as we see them learn about each other’s past hurts and grow together. I have never rooted more for an anime couple in my whole life.

My Review: The depth we get from 13 episodes is wild. I was expecting a cute show, and I got so much more. This anime will leave an imprint on your heart that I cannot explain. If you add this anime please put it at the top of your list.

Sakamoto Days: The Life of a Retired Hitman

Right off the bat, I am a sucker for this genre. I am going to call this genre wholesome gangsters. What is not to love? Tough, badass, killers who are wholesome now. This show reminds me of a mix of the ways of the house husband and The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting. If you haven’t seen either of those you are missing out. These anime show that everyone can live a normal life and turn over a new leaf.

Favorite Drama Anime

I have a hard time with the drama genre as a whole. Almost every anime is drama in the genre list, and normally, I wouldn’t consider most of them to even be drama. When I was trying to figure out this list, it was hard to narrow the anime down into anime I could consider to be drama. If you wouldn’t consider these anime a drama, let me know in the comments because I still can’t fully say I understand the drama genre.

With that being said let’s get into my favorite drama anime.

Bye for now!
