The Gift
The Gift By Temeriel Smith “One, two, three, four,” I count slowly out loud trying to drift off into a restful sleep. “Why can’t I just fall asleep for once?” Slowly I rise out of bed accepting another sleepless night. Things have been hard since the uprising happened. No one knows who threw the first punch between us humans and the Masses. But it has been none ending explosions and war here on earth. Everywhere you look there is destruction and women being snatched. I make my way down the stairs and into the kitchen. I grab a glass and pour myself some water. Leaning back against the counter I sip and look out into the forest. I had to escape Texas three months ago. I was almost captured by the masses and taken to I don’t know where. All I know is that a brown wrapped box shows up outside your house and then you are gone. I had one outside my door and I ran. They took my neighbor and her daughters just moments before I got my box.

The Overdose
There I was standing, with my eyes shut. Kissing the man of my dreams. I just heard the words “ You may kiss the bride. “ And I was so ready to be his woman for the rest of my life. The life I had left behind was painful and I did a lot of things to climb out of that rabbit hole. But here I was, finally. With Mr. Dreamy . I could feel his soft , warm lips on mine. But then, I felt a very cold wind. I opened my eyes and tried to comprehend what I was seeing. No ! I looked around and seen everyone at my outdoor wedding, on the ground. In snow! Most were face down. The pastor was slumped over. And my groom. My beautiful love was on the floor of the gazebo. Also face down. There was snow in blankets, matching my wedding dress. Snow in my hair. My lips were cold. How long had I been here? What happened? Is this a dream? Yes it must be. Or rather a nightmare. The wind howled around the gazebo and I looked at my frozen bouquet. I kneeled down to touch my husband. So cold. I turned him over , and it was scary. His eyes. They were like two frozen butterflies. I screamed and rose up. I turned to the pastor and his eyes were the same. Frozen butterflies .

As you walk in the red front door and past the formal lounge and dining, past the staircase that led to the bedrooms and through the living area, you reach the kitchen. The Truce
King Raïm of North Sayfair stared at the wall of the luxurious anteroom. The vacant castle, reserved for meetings in the neutral territory of Middle Sayfair, was given a deep clean and polish in time for such a monumental occasion. The torchlight bounced off of the lustrous golden walls giving the room a rich, warm glow. Queen Maisie stared at the king, his blonde beard was neatly trimmed to a point. He seemed transfixed with the wall. She cleared her throat.

She held a mug smelling of apples, and he asked, “Hard Cider?”
