WHY I TEACH-Part 31: It’s Only a Rumor
At the beginning of the new school year, I was on cloud nine. Only one more year of Mr. Myers! The hopes of applying for and getting 107A’s teaching schedule were mere months away. It seemed as if nothing could possibly go wrong. I floated into Mr. B.’s classroom.

WHY I TEACH-Part 29: Nepotism
I’d blocked off an hour to explain all the Industry Certification requirements to Mr. Smart. I figured since he was a long-term sub he was qualified to teach. I painstakingly went over all of the requirements and showed him the easy to follow checkoff list.

Teacher Appreciation Week
It’s teacher appreciation week! One of the most important jobs is an educator. Research has shown that the investment in early education improves not only cognitive abilities, but also critical behavioral traits like sociability, motivation and self-esteem in children. For those reasons it is extra important to highlight those molding and educating children during their earliest development stages. We had the pleasure of speaking with Terressa Brown, founder of Ms T’s Helping Hands about her backstory and her successful company.

Help From a Teacher Part 2
After having a rough time as a sixth grader the year before, Anthony prepared to begin to have a new start as a seventh grader for the fall of 2012. He grew a inch taller and was twelve going on thirteen, starting to wait on the school bus on his own. It was somewhat of a slow start for him being independent but he still needed help with several things. Upon walking on the bus, the first person he sees is Gary, who had been teasing Anthony back in sixth grade. And of course they were still in the same homeroom as before. However, Anthony was paired with a different paraprofessional whom he never really interacted with before. He also got to have Mr Benton as the head teacher and he would work with him. And Mrs Wilkerson was still working as one of the head teachers and supervisors to the teachers. That year, two teachers, whom Anthony was familiar with from elementary school, would join as paraprofessionals for the sixth graders. He had known them from his time as a fourth and fifth grader and they were transferred to the middle school around the summer. Anthony was assigned his classes for the year and was somewhat pleased because he figured it probably won't be hard as the year before. However there was algebra, which was being taught to the seventh and eighth graders. He also English, social studies, science and journalism. Journalism is in the eighth and final period of the school day, but the paraprofessional and Anthony don't attend because for some reason, it doesn't apply to certain students. Instead, they would go to the homeroom where they would meet up with Mr Benton. On one hand, he would work one particular student at a time to help with classwork or homework. On the other hand, he would sometimes work with two or three students as they had similar assignments and he had the time and patience to help them focus. The way he helped was completely different than how Mrs Wilkerson helped her students. Mrs Wilkerson worked with sixth graders and and a few seventh graders, while Mr Benton was assigned the rest of the seventh graders and eighth graders. Anthony was having a hard time with algebra, but doing very well with the other classes. Especially social studies, because he was very interested in history, had a nice teacher and read a book for the class. Mr Benton saw potential in Anthony and he did not want him to waste it all because he could not understand how to do algebra. To be fair, math is sometimes a hard subject. In between classes, during lunch breaks and the final period, Mr Benton worked closely with the students and give them time to think of a answer with better results. Mr Benton also encouraged Anthony's love for history and drawing comic strips. Also Mr Benton had a tablet which he allowed his students to use, as long they took turns and sharing with each other. Meanwhile he was to convince Gary to get along with Anthony to avoid problems and befriend each other. But no one would knew how long the new friendship would last and it would not last that long because Gary continued being rude to Anthony even as far as harassing and insulting his family for no reason. In the season half of the year, Anthony had gotten more focus on his work with the assistance of Mr Benton and his paraprofessional. Towards the end of the school year, with the seniors moving forward to high school, Anthony knew it would be his turn for the next school year and looked forward to working with Mr Benton for his senior year. But unknown to him it would be the only year Anthony would work with him.

Help From a Teacher Part 3
It was the first day of eighth grade in fall of 2013 for Anthony and he knew it would be trouble from the beginning. First his school bus arrived nearly an hour late. Then it traveled around the borough of Queens to pick up other students. However no one exited the houses or either aware the bus was outside. After a tiring bus ride and being the only one for the morning route, Anthony does arrive at school at nine thirty. He goes to the same homeroom he had been going to for the past two years. He was anticipating having Mr Benton as his head teacher with the same paraprofessional as he did in seventh grade. To his surprise, he instead sees a woman in her early thirties sitting at the desk where Mr Benton always sat. That is when he discovered she is Ms Brown. Anthony thought she was substituting for Mr Benton for the day until he realized that he retired during the summer and Ms Brown became the new supervisor and Mrs Wilkerson was still working there as one of the supervisor. Anthony was wondering how Mrs Wilkerson was still working in the school because of how she was. Ms Brown was like nearly a couple of decades younger than Mrs Wilkerson and a decade younger than the other teachers. Even though he was paired with the same paraprofessional, Anthony kinda hesitated to go to Ms Brown for several reasons. One, he saw her as replacing Mr Benton. Two, she didn't understand the work that Anthony and the other students were doing, which is algebra and Anthony had difficulty with it too. Three, he felt that they could not related to each other. Anthony was approaching fourteen and still felt out of place despite being in the same school for two years. At least he hung out Paul and were in the same class but he felt like they were drifting apart because Anthony was feeling more angry and depressed than ever, while Paul was unruly and had more contempt towards the school. For Anthony, things were about to get just as bad for him. During the beginning of the school year, Anthony dealt with a incident on the school bus when a sixth grader threw a empty water bottle at him. He came close of throwing it back but missed. The bus matron separated the two and gave the sixth grader a warning that she will write him up next time. A day or two later, Ms Brown came up to Anthony and asked him why he did not told about the bus incident, having to hear it from someone else. He said that she might not do enough to help him and she would not understand either. Then shave told him that she dealt with being made fun of as a child and plan to help him by setting up a meeting with other school officials in discussing the incident and what to do in the future. However since the situation was handled beforehand, she was only able to talk to her own teachers in the special education homeroom so their own students can be prepared. Anthony soon realized that he and Ms Brown were not different and finally found some common ground between each other. She told that her husband is a police officer who helps around the community and she was pregnant with her third child and was due in the early summer. Eventually she helped Anthony with his English homework and she was the first and only one to find out that he was moving to another state after graduation. Although he would not move until half a month later. Ms Brown would go into labor around June before the end of the school year. After giving birth, she returned on the last day of school, showing everyone her newborn daughter. Anthony appreciated what Ms Brown has done for him.
