In Chapter Five, Jake goes to the Sheppard house to speak with Elise. Her mother tells him she isn’t home and shares that she has been living with Elise and the children ever since Rick’s murder. After a few pertinent questions and some pleasantries, Jake returns to the precinct where he finds Greg’s cell phone record on his desk. In scanning through it, he sees a number that seems familiar.

One Night
Hundi and Riman were inseparable friends. They had bonded over common experiences, trust, and mutual silent understanding of one another. They spent most nights at one of the city's most popular bars, where they relaxed after a day's work nightly. It was not different on that evening. They sat at the corner table they always used, having a laugh and cracking jokes as the night wore on. By the time they decided to leave, it was well past midnight. The streets were eerily quiet, and the dim glow of the streetlights cast long shadows on the empty road.

Jane was still on his mind as he sat in his office with his hands clasped in front of him for over two hours. Their first meeting was anything but productive. It made things clear to Max. He would have to work harder to gain her trust. She was every bit like the scared child she appeared to be, and rightfully so. The way Jensen and his team found her, it was obvious she’d been through something extremely traumatizing, and Jane didn’t give him the immediate sense that she understood everything that was happening to her.
