As his truck lumbered down the gravel path, Charles watched the home he’d shared with Katherine for over a decade dwindle in the rearview mirror, swallowed quickly by the pines and other trees that enveloped the winding path leading down the mountain and away from their secluded sanctuary. As he rumbled down the glorified driveway, he could hear the sounds of work echoing through the forest surrounding their mountaintop home.

When Theo opened his eyes, he found himself staring at a speckled white drop-ceiling. The air smelled strange: a mixture of strong chemical cleaners, layered on top of the faint yet distinct odors of blood and human excrement. A soft, incessant beeping to his left broke the shaky hold that sleep still had on him, drawing his attention to the source: a sturdy, chrome pole, with a clear plastic bag of fluid hanging off it. The latter of which was connected to his arm via the thinnest tube.

Cole took a deep breath through his nose as he exited the portal behind Davin, his daughter secure on his hip. The smell of home soaked into his pores and he could feel himself relax minutely. She tugged gently on his beard, something that made him smile since that had been what she’d done as a baby when they’d fallen asleep together. “Daddy,” she said in what he was sure she thought was a whisper, “is this Santa?”
