COMPENDIUM “It is a wizard’s duty to be the armor of those who cannot wear it.” The thought struck Thaddeus as his staff of fine white birch whirled around his head. A wall of fire raced down the walls of the stone tower and incinerated the approaching siege tower full of Gothinians. Bodies tumbled twenty feet as the tower became a bonfire. The wizard found it comical that this was the moment the words of his late master bubbled to the forefront of his notedly extraordinary mind. Coddgery old kook.

We spent the whole day at the bedroom window, just waiting for the sun to set. I think we both knew that it was the last time we would ever see our beloved home. I hate to think what must've been going through Dex's mind: did he truly understand that we were leaving forever? Or did he still hold out some hope that one day we could return? The first three days dragged by like a cinderblock on Nadia’s brain. She wasn’t sure why she found it so hard compared to previous observations, but she did. She suspected that the strange mix of regimen and no regimen at all added to the numbness of it. But Joan’s complete lack of interaction was the icing on the cake. She didn’t like small talk, out loud observations and any questions about her life were met with a blank stare. Fun Fact: I first wrote this story waaay back in 2017 after a conversation with a friend of mine: we were playing the old 'ring game' to find out how many kids we were supposed to have... I came out with only one girl, and, for some reason, felt very insulted by it. After I wrote the story, I was so proud of it I included it in a small, personal book of early short stories to keep on my shelf. I still have that book, by the way, and was so proud of this one that I posted it's (very) rough draft to the Fiction Press account I kept years ago.
