The Lure
I heaved the last trunk over the lip of the top step, staggering back with it before dropping it to the ground. I sank onto a loose cushion nearby, gasping for breath as I surveyed the damage: crates and trunks scattered across the suite, loose items draped over every bit of furniture, which was just about all askew.

Guardian Angels
Akarisa stared up at the night sky, her arms tucked behind her head as she listened to the soft music drifting from the band’s practice room. She took in a deep breath, letting it out in a slow exhale, savoring the taste of the fall air on her tongue. Her eyes drifted closed as she tried to remember what fall in the sunlight had been like, before the Betrayal. Before her people, the Ayniel, guardian “angels” of humanity, had been forced into hiding.

Beginning of the End
I screamed, my voice raw, the sound of it lost amongst the wailing rising around me. I stumbled out into the street, blankets wrapped around my shoulders and trailing on the ground behind me, the door wide open behind me. Pieces littered the street-of what, I didn’t want to think about. I slipped in something warm and wet, and refused to look down as my stomach roiled. I kept screaming, but I couldn’t even hear my own voice. Branches blocked the end of the street, the ground mostly frozen and slick beneath my toes. The sky was still gray, the remnants

Guardian Angels 1 Revised
Silence, except for the hooting of an owl somewhere in the dark woods to the left. Kalin took in a deep breath of cool night air, holding it for a few seconds before slowly letting it out as she opened her eyes. The path stretched out in front of her, lit at intervals by the campus lights. Almost there, she told herself. Just two more years of hard studying, and she’d have her degree. She could take care of her sister and parents. She tilted her head back, looking up at the stars. Even with the campus lighting, she could see more stars here in the mountains than at home in the city. She tugged her hoodie closer around her, swallowing her nerves. It wasn’t like they weren’t supposed to be out at night, but something about the quiet made her feel out of place.

A World Without Color
Lexy crouched atop a rock jutting out from the hillside overlooking her hometown, nestled in what had once been a riotously colorful valley. They had been a tourist town, only a few hours between the ocean and the mountains. Fewer people came and went nowadays, but she could still see movement among the buildings. Hardly anyone drove anymore, though, as the stop lights functioned less well when everything was gray. There had been several bad accidents at first, and now most people walked.

The Traveler
I spin around, desperately searching the packed sea of faces for any sympathetic expressions. “That’s what she said.” I insist, disliking how my voice rose higher and higher in pitch, as if whining at a room of figurehead royals and politicians was going to win me any favors.

A Dance with Shadows
It was the hottest day of the year. Actually it was the hottest day on record. Alayia twisted her long hair up on top of her head, seeking some sort of respite from the scorching sun above her. “Curse you, mom.” she muttered, but she was looking down at the dirt path beneath her feet. As the sun god’s daughter, she knew the heat wave was mostly her fault. She had just disappeared one day while her mom was working. And she had a charm to ensure none of the other gods could see her.
