Do Not Eat the Corn
I remember the view from this spot before it all began. There was a rainbow touching down at the top of the hill, which was covered in green grass and overlooked a creek, long dry by now. On the other side of the creek were fields of corn, green and luscious. Then the rain tapered off to almost nothing. Tornadoes and high winds further dried out the land. The population was a fraction of what it once was.

Rain Barrel
Water is a precious resource on this planet, particularly freshwater. Many people need to walk miles to a pump to get it, while others are only allowed certain amounts daily or monthly. The World Economic Forum listed water scarcity as one of the largest global risks in 2019. This makes have vegetation, especially vegetation that needs water, seem a bit superfluous.

A Diet Refocus
The April sun seemed especially strong. The dandelions had just appeared recently and were a beautiful, bright yellow. I hopped around the yard taking in the beautiful view. I had not picked my nest yet but knew this backyard would be a good place. There looked to be a nice garden at the east end of the lawn. Asparagus was already peeking through. I hoped there would be carrots later in the year. Hopping along the fence line, I found some tall grass that was going to seed and stopped to take a few bites.

Mom's First Book Suggestion
It was somewhere around 1998. I was interested in sports and playing outside or watching superhero cartoons and playing games. Reading was always a requirement in school, and we had a decent library at school and at home. My mom was trying to get me to read a book that had recently come out in paperback. It was something about a Sorcerer’s Stone, but near teenage boys are hardly concerned with what their mother thinks, especially about books. Eventually I needed some “reading points” for reading class at school. So, I went back to that paperback sitting in my headboard bookcase. I was engrossed immediately, and luckily enough, a second book in the series had recently come out as well. My life has benefited greatly from that one book suggestion.

Life as Part of the Great Machine
Sometimes there is healing in writing. Sometimes we feel a pull to express ourselves in new ways. Where to begin expressing me? With words of course. Words are made up of letters, which we learn somewhere around age three. Letters are a simple concept, and some words are quite simple as well. Combine simple and complex words and beautiful things can happen. Some of my favorite words from the end of The Great Gatsby are as follows:

Red-Winged Blackbird
As it was setting, the sun had just touched the top of the few corn stalks that were remaining. A little boy and an old man were sitting in two chairs on the back deck. Watching the harvester finish the field, both were lost in their own thoughts. The old man looked at the field one last time and leaned forward.

From Red Deer to Nessie
Like many days in Scotland, it was cloudy with rain slowly falling on Loch Ness. The cool March day kept most tourists from looking for Nessie. The ash and larch trees looked thick and healthy on the hillsides surrounding the loch. The strong breeze pushed the water back and forth, and any splashes that reached the boaters felt quite cool. The tour boat set out with the guide pointing to his house on the hillside. Imagine waking up every day and looking down on Loch Ness; the hillsides surrounding it beautiful with trees and a light dusting of snow or a warm day with rays of sunshine shimmering on the loch.

Off the Elevator
He stepped off the elevator with purpose as if he had been there before. As he exited to the left, Leon scanned quickly for signs. He saw the room number and discovered he had luckily picked the right direction. His wife was waiting in her hospital room. Leon quietly opened the door and found Janie was sleeping. He went back out to pace the halls.

From Chime to Chime
The little town’s church bell chimed, much like it used to every evening at 6:00. A day that started miserable had turned beautiful. The early morning rain and clouds had moved on leaving a sunny evening with a crisp breeze. We walked slowly down the street, not sure whether to hold hands. The wind pushed her fragrance toward me, the sweet smell still etched in my brain all these years later. Leaves spiraled down from the trees and across the asphalt road we were walking on. What does one talk about on a first date? I don’t remember what we spoke of on the walk, but her smile, the smell of perfume, and the spectrum of fall colors blend into a beautiful picture in my mind.
