Dealing With the Christmas Grumps
I woke up with that infernal Christmas song in my head. No, not that one. Not that one either. One that I really don't like, because even from the beginning of my grasp of the English language, I felt that it was cultural appropriation. Or whitewashing. Of course, those terms didn't exist some fifty mumble years ago, but when you grow up in a bilingual family with four archeologists in it, you absorb some ideas early.

The Ephemera of Experience
I got to see Lämning again three weeks ago! I know Ren faire season is over in this part of the country, but the local one decided to open up for three weekends to do a Yuletide faire. The last weekend just wrapped up, and it was cold. Luckily they were inside, and there were heaters chugging away.

The Dangers of Trucking
Man, I don’t know what to tell ya. Look, I’ve been a long-distance trucker all my life. I got the bug from Dad, and he told me about all the things that could go wrong on the road. I spent more time under the hood of his old rig than riding on my own bike, and could likely build the thing again if you give me the parts.

Have Rock, Will Travel
I thought being a rock would be pretty boring. You'd think I'd have the pattern down by now. I've been a rock for a good long time. Sure, it was fun and exciting in the beginning, all the fire and meeting all these nice other minerals and that party and the fireworks and moving to a new neighborhood, but that cooling time was really, really slow.

The Instinct of Collection. Top Story - November 2024.
Humans can be funny and predictable creatures. I was reminded of that fact strongly when I went to the Renaissance faire at the end of the summer season. I have friends among some of the entertainers; I like to see them perform live, support them, then wander around to check out other performers I think I may like.

Defining Family
"I'll make up a kettle," Avery muttered as they saw my face when I was blown inside. They hurried into the kitchen. Rowan hung up my coat, and Ash wrapped me in a blanket and installed me in the ratty but comfy chair by the stove. The others drew closer. We weren't rich enough to have an open fire to cuddle near, and we certainly couldn't afford the wood to go with it. We didn't have much at all, but it was ours.
